The car market in the USA is in big trouble. Repossessions at all time high, used prices way up, etc. It's complicated, but simple. Poor people can't afford cars anymore. When this happened in the 1980s Japan took advantage and sold a ton of cheap alternatives. South Korea did the same, to a lesser extent, in the 2000s. I guarantee right now that everyone would be snatching up $9800 no-frills Chinese cars if not for protectionism.

Ford, Chevy, GM et al could respond or fill in the gap by making some low-end models but... they can't. It's impossible to domestically build an inexpensive car anymore. Safety and environmental alone would tank this, but the way these corporations are structured makes engineering extremely expensive. SAP being dogshit doesn't help. Nor do the hoards of women in admin. Also, these companies have little incentive as the bottom 60% of consumers only spend 20% of the money.

The first brick to give way will be car ownership but this can only go so far in the land of roads. A cheaper alternative WILL be found. It's time to invest in motorcycles.
