I do think it's very funny that John michael greer joked that raccoons were the next race of advanced beings after humans have gone extinct from our own hands, that we read reports that raccoons are entering into the wolf/dog stage that man's best friend entered 30,000 years ago in a period of 300 years. Here in the rural South and mountains raccoons pups were always friendly. Hell, I knew 2 people that kept em as pets but let them roam when they got old. Maybe they are teaching others they benefit more from our kindness than getting blasted with a .22 for making a mess of our trash.

Raccoons Are Starting to Domesticate — Study Finds

Urban raccoons are undergoing physical and behavioral changes: their snouts are becoming shorter, and their aggression toward humans is decreasing. These are signs of early domestication.

The reason? To live near people, raccoons must be bold but not aggressive. Calm individuals are more successful at finding food and pass these traits on to their offspring.

In essence, raccoons are trading freedom for food — just like cats and dogs once did. So it’s entirely possible they’ll become fully domesticated pets in the near future.
