X-rays - Seeing the Invisible: Art, Evidence and War Crimes

Two centuries after its discovery X-rays are still used in medical diagnostic/imaging and in visual arts. They have played an important role in investigations in Latin America (mid-1980s) and ex-Yugoslavia (1990s) in determining the causes of death, injury and in exhumations and recovery of mass graves in proving war crimes and genocide in Srebrenica.
This talk and workshop will cover the use of X-rays in visual arts and as evidence of war crimes through forensic investigations and prosecutions, examining Henri Lewis's artwork Radiography (1990) and the International Criminal Court Lubanga case involving the recruitment of child soldiers.

"Visualising Threat" with Shona Illingworth and Anthony Downey. We live in a contemporary global (dis)order defined by aerial forms of hyper-surveillance. In the shadow of physical and psychological threats, indefinite aerial surveillance, sustained bombardment, and the routine deployment of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles (UCAV), entire populations now live under conditions of unrelenting anxiety. There is a lack of transparency when understanding the fatal interlocking of global surveillance technologies and automated targeting networks. Shona Illingworth and Anthony Downey will address these concerns through a discussion of their ongoing work on the Airspace Tribunal, an international people’s tribunal that was formed to consider the case for and against a proposed new human right to live without physical or psychological threat from above.

She will discuss the impact of the work of Chelsea Manning, Lisa Ling and Reality Winner (among others) and relate it to the effects of truth-telling in often male-dominated fields such as the military. Their stories will be linked to other powerful activities by women in the arts, media and journalism who are working to denounce war crimes.

The title of the project sounds purposefully radical. “Нет”, the Russian word for ‘no’, is a symbol of disobedience, born out of ten years of resilience, stubbornness and the will to fight. Saying 'no' is a fundamental and inviolable human right that is denied to many people around the world today, including those in Russia. The mere word 'no' can lead to arrest or imprisonment in some countries. It can cost lives. The exhibition brings together the voices of those who, against all odds, continue to dare to say no.
The exhibition is curated by an international team of independent & critical journalists and artists who were forced to leave Russia in 2014 and co-founded Meduza, a Riga-based news outlet in Russian and English.
The exhibition will continue to run from 26 April through 6 July 2025.
