State of Global Water Resources 2021:

- Large areas of the globe recorded drier than normal conditions in 2021 β€“ a year in which precipitation patterns were influenced by climate change and a La Ninβ€Œa event.

- Disturbance in hydrological cycles has left global food security management in a vulnerable state.

- Between 2001 and 2018, UN-Water reported that 74% of all-natural disasters were water-related.

- 6 billion people face inadequate access to water for at least a month per year.

- Annual glacier runoff increased initially due to the melting of glaciers until the turning point called peak water is reached after which the runoff declines.

What is the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)?

-The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is an intergovernmental organization with a membership of 193 Member States and Territories.

-India is a member of WMO.
It originated from the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), which was established after the 1873 Vienna International Meteorological Congress.

-Established by the ratification of the WMO Convention on 23rd March 1950.

-  WMO became the specialized agency of the United Nations for meteorology (weather and climate), operational hydrology and related geophysical sciences.'

-WMO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
