Indimimus Jayanti

- Indimimus Jayanti has become the twelfth subgenus, or species, of spider cricket
- It identified under the genus Arachnomimus Saussure, 1897.
- Found in the Kurra caves of Chhattisgarh
- New subgenus was named Jayanti after Professor Jayant Biswas, a leading cave explorer in India.

Difference - Indimimus subgenu is different from the Arachnomimus and Euarachnomimus subgenera because of the male genitalia structure.

- Unique: Insects have a lock-and-key model genitalia structure which is unique to each subgenus.

Significance –
1. They may be communicating by beating their abdomen or any other body part on the cave walls (Vibrational communication).
2. help in designing hearing aids for human which can capture quietest signals and amplify to an audible hearing range.

CD8 T cells

- Study to better understand the immune determinants of Covid-19 deaths.

- CD8 T cells are a type of white blood cells that can kill cancer cells and other invaders.

Finding -
1. Blood cancer patients with Covid-19 who had higher CD8 T cells were more than 3 times likelier to survive than patients with fewer CD8 T cells.
2. Patients with blood cancers, in particular patients treated with anti-CD20 antibodies, had decreased B cells and antibodies compared to patients with solid cancers and patients without cancer.

H10N3 Bird Flu

News: A man in China’s Jiangsu province has been confirmed as the first human case of infection with a rare strain of bird flu known as H10N3.

- The WHO said while the source of the patient’s exposure to the virus was not known.

- Since no other cases were found among the local population, there was no indication of human-to-human transmission yet.

- H10N3 strain of avian influenza is a low pathogenic or relatively less severe strain of the virus in poultry.

- The risk of it spreading on a large scale was very low.

Spread –
1. Infected birds spread the virus through their saliva, mucus and poop.

2. Humans get infected when the virus gets in the eyes, nose or
mouth, or is inhaled from infected droplets or dust.

3. As long as avian influenza viruses circulate in poultry, sporadic infection of avian influenza will occur in humans.

ASPAGNII

- News: Department of Biotechnology- National Institute of Immunology (DBT-NII) receives ASPAGNII trademark.

- It is India’s First Indigenous Tumour Antigen SPAG9.

- SPAG9 was discovered by Dr Anil Suri in 1998.

- Currently, ASPAGNII is being used in dendritic cell (DC) based immunotherapy in cervical, ovarian cancer and will be used in breast cancer.

- Immunotherapy is a new approach that exploits the body’s inner capability to put up a fight against cancer.

- With this approach, either the immune system is given a boost, or the T cells are “trained’’ to identify recalcitrant cancer cells and kill them.

- In DC-based vaccine, patient’s cells called monocytes are collected from their blood and modified into dendritic cells.

- The DCs are primed with ASPAGNII and are injected back to the patient to help the ‘fighter’ cells, or T-cells, in the body to kill the cancer cells.

- DC-based immunotherapy is safe, affordable and can promote antitumor immune responses and prolonged survival of cancer patients.
