RT @ryanberckmans: Ethereum's multi-trillion-dollar bet on the hub & spokes strategy
- What is eth's hub & spokes strategy?
- How does it work?
- Why is it going to take over the world and win against alt L1s and bitcoin?
Let's dive in
imo it's urgently needed for everyone in ethereum - including the EF and many OGs - to better understand, embrace, and help sell Eth's hub & spokes strategy.
I'll start with a question:
Would people still use today's top L2s if the L1 had 100x the gas limit?
Yes. Yes they would.
You don't use eg. Base or World because they're cheap. You use them because they're cheap *and* because of their unique customer experiences. Apps, culture, integrations, and more.
Having cheap fees was the initial cold start benefit for L2s. Cheap fees are still super important but are no longer the operative benefit.
The planet-scale benefit of L2s are the unique customer experiences enabled by L2s having the best control and customization opportunities - while still being part of overall ethereum for trust minimized bridging of assets and services between the L1 and all L2s.
Base will always be the home for Coinbase products. World Chain will always be the home for their proof-of-humanity products. IMX for games. Soneium for Sony's products and integrations. There are many, many other examples.
Study the list on L2Beat and see for yourself how each L2 defends its tvl/activity. It's not just cheap fees. It's business model design. There's a Cambrian explosion of L2s unfolding in plain view. That's the magic of eth's hub & spokes strategy.
L2s are irreplaceable because for the vast majority of use cases and new entrants (99.9% aren't here yet), L2s are just better than alt L1s, and also better than trying to shoehorn a complex large business model into the eth L1. L2s offer better control, better customization, are cheaper, and are more connected to the eth economy, which is the largest and most diverse onchain economy, by far.
Ethereum's hub & spokes strategy
The hub. The L1 is a risk minimized hub with a rich app economy, including defi, bridging, tokenization, and lots more. Anything that's highest-value-per-byte will thrive on the L1.
The spokes. L2s are the spokes, with an awesome variety of tradeoffs and specializations. Not just technical and decentralization tradeoffs, but diverse business models, partners, integrations, customizations, cultural priorities, app focuses, and much more.
Ethereum needs both a strong hub and strong spokes.
L1 scaling only makes the hub stronger and can't possibly detract from the spokes. L1 scaling is not a threat or replacement to L2s. For the reasons above, L2s are irreplaceable.
Eth's hub & spokes strategy is a winner.
Ethereum is eating the economic world.
Many are sleeping on this and will realize it as our largest L2s continue outgrowing and dwarfing alt L1s, and as capital, activity, and fees grow on the L1. Value accrual to ETH will follow.
