β EFFECTS OF ATMOSPHERE
β‘ Absorption
β If the total amount of energy radiated from the sun towards the earth and its atmosphere is taken to be 100 per cent, about 14 per cent of this amount is absorbed by the atmospheric gases (e.g. by ozone in the stratosphere to larger extent and oxygen and carbon dioxide to very limited extent), water hare in nature.
β shortest wavelengths ranging between 0.02 micron and 0.29 micron are absorbed by oxygen (Oβ) and ozone gases.)
β Water vapour absorbs the incoming solar radiation waves of the wavelengths ranging between 0.9 micron and 2.1 microns.

πBrazil's Pantanal wetland which is world's largest tropical wetland is in news because of forest fire.
πHumans have cut down nearly 20% of the Amazon in the last 50 years, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). If another 20% of the Amazon disappears, that could trigger a "dieback" scenario in which the forest would dry out and become a savannah.

β BLACK SOIL.
#Soil
β The parent material for most of the black soil are the volcanic rocks that were formed in the Deccan Plateau.
β In Tamil Nadu, gneisses and schists form the parent material. The former are sufficiently deep while the later are generally shallow.
β These are the region of high temperature and low rainfall. It is, therefore, a soil group typical to the dry and hot regions of the Peninsula.
β A typical black soil is highly argillaceous (containing clay) with a large clay factor, 62 per cent or more.
β In general, black soils of uplands are of low fertility while those in the valleys are very fertile.
β The black soil is highly retentive of moisture.
β It swells greatly on accumulating moisture.
β In the rainy season, the soil gets very sticky and hence ploughing, and other agricultural activities demand more effort.
β In summer, the moisture evaporates the soil shrinks and is seamed with broad and deep cracks.

β NITROGE CYCLE (Gaseous Cycle)
β Apart from carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, nitrogen is the most prevalent element in living organisms.
β Nitrogen is a constituent of amino acids, proteins, hormones, chlorophylls and many vitamins.
β Plants compete with microbes for the limited nitrogen that is available in the soil. Thus, nitrogen is a limiting nutrient for both natural and agricultural ecosystems.
β Nitrogen exists as two nitrogen atoms (N2) joined by a very strong triple covalent bond (N β‘ N).
β In nature, lightning and ultraviolet radiation provide enough energy to convert nitrogen to nitrogen oxides (NO, NO2, N2O).
β Industrial combustions, forest fires, automobile exhausts and power-generating stations are also sources of atmospheric nitrogen oxides.
