KEFI (AIM: KEFI), the gold and copper exploration and development company with projects in Ethiopia and Saudi Arabia, announced today that it has now assembled the full funding package of US$356 million estimated to be required for the development of the company’s Tulu Kapi gold project in Ethiopia.
In its statement, KEFI said that this package is designed to fund all infrastructure, the start-up of the open pit mine and the initial development of the underground mine.
The Tulu Kapi gold project in western Ethiopia is being progressed towards development, following a grant of a Mining Licence in April 2015. KEFI plans to start production in mid-2023.
At Tulu Kapi, the company expects gold production of 190,000 oz annually, with all-in sustaining costs of between $800/oz and $900/oz. Tulu Kapi's ore reserve estimate totals 15.4Mt at 2.1g/t gold, containing 1.1 Moz. The NPV of KEFI’s beneficial ownership in the two main projects is estimated at £274 million (US$376 million) or 12.6 pence per KEFI share.

NASA Invites Media to Launch of Lucy Mission to Study Trojan Asteroids
The Lucy mission is named after the fossilized skeleton of an early hominin (pre-human ancestor) discovered in Ethiopia in 1974 and named “Lucy” by the team of paleoanthropologists who discovered it. Just as the Lucy fossil provided unique insights into humanity’s evolution, the Lucy mission promises to revolutionize our knowledge of planetary origins and the formation of the solar system, including Earth.

Akobo Minerals applies for a large scale gold mining license Akobo Minerals has today applied for a large scale gold mining license. After more than 10 years of exploration work, an application was submitted in close dialogue with the Ministry of Mines
and Petroleum. Ongoing successful drilling and a high-grade mineral resource from Segele supports our view that mining will be an important and integral part of the company’s future.
The Minister of Mines, Takele Uma said:
“We are cooperating with Etno Mining/Akobo Minerals to finalize the mining license next week, the first week of the Ethiopian New year. Etno Mining has worked relentlessly since the beginning of its exploration activities.”
The mining license area applied for covers a large part of the existing exploration license. A large
scale mining license is normally granted for an initial period of 20 years, then for an additional 10
years. With grant of the mining license we will secure a long term operation for the next 20 years and the opportunity to continue exploration work as we start preparations for mining operations. Typically mining licences include obligations on the company to pay royalties, taxes,
support local communities and undertake ESG programmes – all of which are already within the
company plan.

Ambient air pollution behind recurring economic losses in Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda: UNEP
Death by ambient air pollution cause annually recurring losses in economic production — between 0.08 and 0.3 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) — in Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda, according to a recent report from United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
Ambient air pollution in Africa is lower than in many parts of the world; yet, it contributes to an increasing number of deaths, including from pneumonia, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, chronic lung disease and lung cancer.
It is caused by burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
The report, Air Pollution and Development in Africa: Impacts on Health, the Economy and Human Capital, examined data for the continent, but focused especially on three rapidly developing countries: Ethiopia, Ghana and Rwanda.

In Partnership with The Rockefeller Foundation, African Development Bank and the Agricultural Transformation Energy, The Ministry of Water, Irrigation and Energy (MoWIE) has launched a new agricultural productive use focused project named Decentralized Renewable Energy-Agriculture Modalities (DREAM). The DREAM project is expected to transform household farmer-based Agricultural Commercial Clusters (ACCs) by providing reliable and affordable solar mini-grid power to enable large-scale irrigation farming throughout the year. Compared to current diesel generator-based irrigation solutions, on average the DREAM pilot project is expected to substantially increase:
1. Farmer Productivity by 91%
2. Farm Production by 86%
3. Farmer Income by 80%
In addition to providing renewable energy for large-scale irrigation, the project will contribute towards achieving SDG-7’s goal of electricity access and SDG-6’s goal of clean water supply to household farmers and surrounding communities.

National Mining Research Priority Areas
——
4. Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining
Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) is playing pivotal role in the extraction of placer gold, tantalum, gemstones and other various industrial and construction minerals. To date, it is one of the major extraction methods that contributes to foreign currency earning and job creation and significant contributor to the national economy. However, the ASM activities are largely operated informally with limited available information on production, revenues generation, operations technologies. Therefore, to alleviate the negative impacts often associated with ASM and enhance its impact in socially responsible, environmentally friendly and economically viable socio-economic development, research that advance the understanding and analysis of ASM is vital for sustainable development of the sector.
