This is a classic shell "fork bomb." The code :(){ :|:& };: does the following:

- Define a function named : whose body runs : piped into another : and backgrounds the call (:|:&).
- The trailing : invokes that function.

Each invocation creates two (pipe) calls that themselves spawn more, so process count grows exponentially until the system runs out of process slots/CPU/memory. Result: the machine becomes very slow or unresponsive (denial-of-service). It is malicious and can effectively crash or hang a system if executed.
