Askar: Many early career TECH people don’t know what skills to master.
Brian: There are two types of skills, boring and fun (flashy). Sometimes getting good at boring stuff makes you really valuable. For instance, automating processes. Return on time investment over boring is always better in the long term. While fun (exciting) stuff is changing, boring is stable. Need to find a balance.

Askar: How to help them developers/analysts/managers to build career trajectory in TECH?
Brian: Have you heard of a concept - tacit knowledge. Things you can learn only by experience. While some of codified knowledge is just information you can read about it. You can’t learn tacit knowledge by reading. I suggest you can learn a lot of big things in the small project. A big one year project has a lot of the same issues as in a small project. Which are more safe as well.
Askar: What is a small project?
Briand: Just like a concept of fractal in math. The same failure modes. The need to change/refactor so nothing will breach. Small project – one day of half a day to complete. Make it with a group of people. And then reflect. It’s a powerful way to accelerate experiential learning.
We undervalue the coaching/mentoring experiential tacit knowledge. But no one simply learns how to do a big project from reading a book.
Askar: How do you organize code reviews?
Brian: First in a general view. Google wide, Google as a company believes a code review should be performed totally starting from the pull request till merge operation. Every change is reviewed by a domain expert. A lot of changes in a codebase. Structurally it is built in by a local review.
The only way to get to the tree is when someone will review it. Sometimes there are several reviews.
There’s a concept of readability. If I have a python readability, I will be reviewing python code.
There are at least two concepts in the review. There are good practices in the company which are reflected in some documents. Then, will those changes/code make sense for the person who is reviewing. For even a small project there are at least three people. Past me, present me and a future me who is annoyed by reading my code 😊
How can code review go bad? Because it’s very personal. Criticism is not targeted at a person. How well feedback will be communicated. In my daily life as a DevRel, it’s telling stories. Often, I work with code which does not go to production. Anything we do, a blogpost, code, video – it’s peer reviewed. We don’t call it code review, we call it peer review. What can go wrong here. Is it clean?
An artefact needs to communicate to people. It’s philosophically. During developer’s life systems are going to be more abstract, complex. Maybe a point for people at the “before junior” stage. How much time do you spend troubleshooting? That’s the natural stage of software engineering. You get stuck. If you get more senior within time, you will spend more time between being stuck. If you will get that spark of excitement in this period of time between being stuck, then you will be more happy as a TECH person. #GDGAlmaty @devs_kz

awareness raising workshop on the “Universal Service Fund
Modernization in the Post-COVID19 World”, which will to highlight case
studies,  and will be held from 22 to 23 June 2022, during 13:00 - 15:30
hours (Bangkok Time, UTC+7), in a virtual mode via Zoom. This workshop
is organized by the Working Group 1 on Connectivity for All [1] , of the
Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway (AP-IS) [2] Steering Committee,
and supported by the AP-IS Secretariat, i.e. the ICT and Development
Section of ESCAP.

  The key objective of the workshop is to enhance the knowledge and
understanding on the Universal Service Fund (USF) concept, process,
mechanism, and the technicalities of the USF life cycle - through
sharing successful cases of the USF funding and implementation. For your
