Dear wonderful people of the Earth, thank you so much for your messages and offers of support re yesterday's earthquakes in Turkey - you can not imagine how much your thoughts are appreciated.
Just like 1999, the catastrophe kickstarted incredible drives, efforts and stories of volunteerism, one of which I'd like to tell you about today.
As thousands of selfless volunteers begin their journey to help the affected on the ground, another valiant effort is taking place at a front that had not existed back in 1999.
It has ben long known that Turkey harbors one of the most vibrant ecosystems of software developers, and hundreds of wonderful volunteer devs came together immediately following the disaster to start working on applications to help those affected, and the emergency services that are trying to get to them.
A number of incredible apps have been developed in an unbelievable 24 hours on an open source basis, such as:
A project to scrape addresses from calls of help over social media, standardize them and show them on a map for perusal of emergency services - map service live on https://afetharita.com manual data entry on https://depremyardim.com and open source code on https://lnkd.in/e326TAgR
A portal collecting all the emergency information available that would be useful for anyone affected or wishing to help https://afetbilgi.com (in development)
An application to centralize and match certain non-medical aid efforts i.e. food and clothing, where the affected can issue specific aid requests and providers can list their offerings by type https://enkazdayim.app (live)
A platform to announce that you are safe if you are in an affected area, or if you need help but can not get through to conventional networks and emergency services https://beniyiyim.com/ (live)
New projects are being added and developed as new volunteers join with ideas and take on the open tasks. So, what can you do?
- If you are a developer who would like to offer your time and skills, join the Discord group https://lnkd.in/e-bYBYbJ (all apps, data and discussions in Turkish for time being), make yourself known and pick a task. You can review the code for the projects on the repository above.
- If you are not a developer but still wish to volunteer, you can still join the Discord group and pick an open task on the social media channel or other relevant channels of the project you are interested in.
If you don't have the opportunity to volunteer or are reading this as a non-Turkish speaker, consider amplifying these efforts to your network by resharing this message to help attract the attention of stakeholders who would benefit or would be interested in supporting.
And finally, if you are a provider of technology and services that would like to support these efforts, feel free to contact me to get in touch with the leadership team to discuss how you can assist. Thank you so much! Ilker Akansel
