India moves closer to Project-75I submarine deal

• Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has cleared the proposal to acquire 6 advanced AIP submarines under Project-75I.

• The ₹99,000 crore program is expected to be executed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (Mumbai) in partnership with Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (Germany).

• Final Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approval is still pending before the contract can be signed.

• The submarines will feature Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology with major technology transfer and around 60% indigenisation.

• Construction is expected to begin soon after signing, with the first submarine likely around 2032–33.
