🇺🇸🇨🇦 Trump administration officials have secretly met with Alberta separatists seeking independence from Canada.

The Alberta Prosperity Project, a fringe far-right group, held several meetings in Washington and is seeking US financial backing if a future independence referendum succeeds.

US officials say the meetings were routine and involved no commitments. Treasury officials deny knowledge of any funding request.

Why do they want separation?

Supporters of Alberta separating from Canada believe the province is treated unfairly by the federal government. They feel Alberta gives more money to Canada than it gets back, especially through equalisation payments, while having little influence over decisions made in Ottawa.

Many are also frustrated that federal rules limit oil and gas development, which is a major part of Alberta’s economy. Because of this, some Albertans want more control over their own affairs or believe independence would be a better solution.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on the separatist movement in Alberta :

While appearing on the right-wing TV station Real America's Voice, Bessent claimed Canada won't let Alberta build a pipeline to the Pacific.

"I think we should let them come down into the U.S., and Alberta's a natural partner for the U.S.," he said.

"They have great resources. The Albertans are very independent people," Bessent said, adding there's a "rumour that they may have a referendum on whether they want to stay in Canada or not."

When asked if he knew something about it, Bessent said, "People are talking. People want sovereignty. They want what the U.S. has got.
