re: The Internet never forgets:
Its not only google, also FB, Twitter and all the other social media. Not only that it never forgets, but it also makes things easily searchable. Not too long ago, you might think: "I can hide/be anonymous, because there is too much data to search...". But then along came 'Data-Mining' and now 'BigData' and machine-learning algoritms like 'Deep Mind/Learning'... This makes all those petabytes of information more easily available.searchable. Your 'personal' information may no longer belong to you, how can it be, when its sitting on a server in the USA and a few other places around the world (ever hear of CDNs - Content Delivery Networks?).
As privacy advocates say, "If the service is free, then you are the product". Meaning companies like Google and FB takes your information, re-profile it in many ways and sells that to advertisers etc.. you are now their product!
So what so we do? Does it mean we stop using the internet, or stop using Google and FB? Just the other day, I was having a lunchtime discussion on the subject... "What if Google is to stop working, what will the impact be?" All those kids plagarising materials for their term assignments will suffer 😉 ... but seriously, so will many of us! I use google to do research, answer/ask technical issues and solve problems, for self-education etc.. Many Knowledge-workers will be seriously affected. Although I don't use FB, I know many will suffer drug-like withdrawl symptoms if they cannot use FB.
In fact, there are other dangers associate with FB, with the scams,luring and predation/(sexual & paedophilic), cyber-bullying, terrorism recruitment...
So, can we stop using such services or the internet? Like any other technology, take cars for instance, it presents real danger (car accidents kill more people than a number of infectious disease put together!).. but does it mean we stop or ban such technologies? No, we can't because it has real benefits, is already too ingrained into our culture!, more so for the younger generations (for the digital technology).
The solution, like with cars/driving is to train, educate and legislate. Hence I think ICT education shoudn't only be about technology and usage, but also have a 'Technology & Society' module that discusses the above issues. Also, ultimately, as users we need to take some measure of control over the technology, hence Open Source is crucial.
Thats my rant for the day 😉
PS I work in BigData, and the future I see looks very interesting but at can also be scary!
PPS A famous economsit (I can't remember who) said that we pay a price for each 'Age' that human civilization progresses through:
1. For the 'Fuedal/Agricultural Age' it was 'Freedom',
because most ppl were slaves or serfs to their lords.
2. For the Industrial Age, it was 'Pollution'...
(the haze says it all!)
3. Now in the Information Age, we pay the price of Privacy!

Now here’s a pretty great feature that should speed up the overall adoption of HTTPS. Starting with Firefox 44 Nightly, Mozilla’s web browser will notify users about the insecure type = ”password” forms and mark connection as not secure.
