Ry Cooder – Paris, Texas (Soundtrack)
Warner Bros., 1985

My friend Max gave me this on cassette a while ago and I’m surprised and overjoyed to report that the cassette’s (physically) still got life. That piece of plastic has turned and turned inside my tape deck and then turned some more. The music really knows how to pull on my heartstrings. Not to mention we get to hear Harry Dean Stanton sing on Ry Cooder’s beautifully arranged “Canción Mixteca.” This music turned me back on to playing acoustic guitar. Cooder’s slide playing feels more western than bluesy. Starkness is the name of the game - he lets powerful chords ring out in a lot of space. He lets simple themes ring out in a lot of space. It’s like watching Travis walk through the desert. There’s a lotta space to feeeeeeel.

The Raincoats – The Raincoats
Rough Trade, 1979

What an incredible concoction of originality. This album inspires me to no end. I like to imagine these players forming the songs together. I do know that the origins of certain songs can be credited to certain members but I assume there was collaboration in developing the tunes. The songs aren’t searching-which would be a fine quality-but are fully formed adults saying exactly what they set out to say. The record uses so many different sounds and methods, yet it all sounds like The Raincoats and nothing else sounds like The Raincoats. The songs are catchy and memorable. Honest and sad. Harsh and worried. Loving and up front. I love the sudden changes and wonderful harmonies herein.
