Chris Knox – Seizure

God this one fried my brain when i first heard it, one of the first "lo fi" albums i was ever exposed to as a young lad and probably put the idea in my head that anyone can make music. Chris is next to Daniel Johnston and Rhys Renwick in terms of my favourite lyricists, the topics he covers and how he approaches them is dreamlike and wonderous, truley unmatched in creativity and wit. This record also has the greatest love song ever written in Not Given Lightly. its simple in execution but massive in its ideas, Chris is one of the greatest minds of our times.

Jay Reatard – Blood Visions

This is one everyone has probably put on their list at some point, its a cliche for a reason haha. its hard to think of an album thats more direct in how good it is, from the first 10 seconds its the best and most violent sounding record you have ever heard, pure emotion with no filter as Jay screams desires of murder and lust with the loudest and catchies combination of chords you could ever dream of coming out of six strings. Jay wasnt the best person but he made the best music, the documentary on him is worth a watch and puts this album in more context.

This was one of the first albums i think i ever bought. I got it in the discount bin of a local record store for $2. I'd heard most of the big singles growing up but nothing could prepare me for how batshit insane this album is. it almost feels like a mixtape at times with how varied and all over the place it is, it goes from nu disco to hardcore punk to new wave with very little warning. the sense of humour on the record is also amazing, they dont take themselves seriously whilst making fairly grand statements on culture and australian society in the 90s (sadly still relevant today). massive shame it's never really gotten any traction outside of australia, high recommendation from me.

One of the greatest joys i have in this life is showing people this album and watching them slowly scrunch up their faces in disgust. New transistor heroes is the definition of polarizing. Ive had people describe the album as either the worst or best album they have ever heard. Maybe both are correct but i lean towards best. Its ungodly campy and silly with no ego or attempt to be anything other than themselves backed with some of the most complex instrumentation ever put on a punk record. So many ideas are thrown at the wall in a mess of colours and bright synths. This is what the inside of my head looks like.

I only realised recently how much ass this album kicks. Despite everything seth has ever done being incredible, this one is a little more incredible in my eyes. Pure snot and spit put in jet black wax, this is music to wear sunglasses inside too. Its simple and isnt gonna win any songwriting awards but it gets you moving, you wanna dance or run when listening to rock and roll this good. I also adore all the weirder sounds on here, tons of acoustic guitar and weird guitar sounds, it sounds so natural and fresh ten years later. Really hope this gets a proper reissue someday.

I got this record on a hunch a few years ago and it never left me, debatably the greatest post punk record ever made with some of the best basslines ive ever heard it almost feels angelic with how these songs present themselves. Its got the trademark sense of british snarl and anger with weird almost surreal lyrics and concepts. its hard to write about, theres just this emotion present throughout the whole record, a combination of dread and whimsy through all 12 tracks. Music this good should be a crime!

Its got so much sweet sunshine and switchblade anger that no mainstream record could ever dream of. Its a record that can convince anyone to abandon their life and go into a world of crime and weird punk rock records. If you aint heard this record you have to right fucking now.
