Der russische Präsident Wladimir Putin hat die Abschlussphase eines großangelegten Manövers der russischen Pazifikflotte besucht. Die Übungen laufen seit dem 4. August und umfassen rund 60 Schiffe und Boote sowie mehr als 13.000 Soldaten. An Bord eines Raketenkreuzers erklärte Putin, das Konfliktpotenzial im asiatisch-pazifischen Raum nehme zu. Er verwies dabei auf eine wachsende NATO-Präsenz, neue Militärbündnisse und geplante Waffensysteme in der Region.

Zugleich warnte Putin vor möglichen Beschlagnahmungen russischer Handelsschiffe und Öltransporte. Entsprechende Maßnahmen bezeichnete er als "Piraterie und Raub" und kündigte für diesen Fall eine spiegelbildliche Reaktion Russlands an. Diese müsse sich nicht auf jene Gewässer beschränken, in denen russische Schiffe festgesetzt würden, sondern könne auch den Verantwortungsbereich der Pazifikflotte betreffen.
