Writing a Kubernetes manifest isn't just about copying and modifying it. Security should be at the core.

Some DevOps engineers don't know how to write a Kubernetes manifest that address to best security practices.

This is just one example; there's much more to consider. You can't get this directly from the documentation. You have to dig deep and pull together the necessary information to produce a secure Kubernetes manifest.

This architecture describes how to deploy a microservices application on Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). AKS is a managed Kubernetes service that makes it easy to deploy, manage, and scale containerized applications.

The architecture consists of the following components:
โœ…AKS cluster: The AKS cluster is the foundation of the architecture. It provides the infrastructure for running the microservices application.

โœ…Virtual network: The virtual network isolates the AKS cluster from the rest of the Azure network. It also provides a private network for the microservices application to communicate with each other.

โœ…Ingress controller: The ingress controller is responsible for routing traffic to the different microservices in the application.

โœ…Azure Load Balancer: The Azure Load Balancer distributes traffic evenly across the nodes in the AKS cluster.

โœ…Azure Container Registry: The Azure Container Registry is a private Docker registry for storing the Docker images for the microservices application.

โœ…Azure Pipelines: Azure Pipelines is a continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) service that can be used to build, test, and deploy the microservices application to AKS.

โœ…Helm: Helm is a package manager for Kubernetes that can be used to manage the Kubernetes manifests for the microservices application.

โœ…Azure Monitor: Azure Monitor collects and stores metrics, logs, and traces for the microservices application. It can be used to monitor the health of the application and troubleshoot problems.

โžก๏ธ Deployment process:

The following steps describe the process for deploying a microservices application to AKS using this architecture:
โ˜‘๏ธCreate an AKS cluster.
Create a virtual network for the AKS cluster.
Deploy the ingress controller to the AKS cluster.
Create an Azure Load Balancer.
Create an Azure Container Registry.
Push the Docker images for the microservices application to the Azure Container Registry.
Create a Helm chart for the microservices application.
Deploy the Helm chart to the AKS cluster.
Configure Azure Monitor to collect metrics, logs, and traces for the microservices application.

After a long day of troubleshooting. I realized the error was in the Replicaset and Deployment. Lets talk about that.

๐Ÿ“ฃ ReplicaSet and Deployment :

ReplicaSet and Deployment are both Kubernetes resources used for managing and scaling application instances, but they serve different purposes and have distinct features:

๐Ÿ”– ReplicaSet:
โžก๏ธA ReplicaSet ensures that a specified number of pod replicas are running at any given time.
It is a lower-level controller in Kubernetes.
It does not support declarative updates or rollback strategies.
โžก๏ธWhen using a ReplicaSet, you manage updates manually by creating new ReplicaSets with updated configurations and then deleting the old ReplicaSets.
It is often used directly only in advanced scenarios where finer control over scaling and updates is required.

๐Ÿ”– Deployment:
โžก๏ธA Deployment is a higher-level resource that manages ReplicaSets and provides declarative updates and rollback strategies.
It is a higher-level abstraction built on top of ReplicaSets.
โžก๏ธDeployments allow you to describe the desired state of your application, and Kubernetes handles the process of creating and managing the ReplicaSets to achieve that state.

Netflix's database infrastructure is a true marvel! They use a combination of several cutting-edge technologies to ensure content is available 24/7, without buffering or interruptions.

Netflix's engineering team leverages a diverse array of databases to deliver top-notch service. Here's a glimpse into their database selection:

๐Ÿ” Relational Databases: For billing transactions, subscriptions, taxes, and revenue, Netflix chooses MySQL. They also harness CockroachDB to support multi-region active-active architecture, global transactions, and data pipeline workflows.

๐Ÿ“Š Columnar Databases: Netflix turns to Redshift and Druid for structured data storage, Spark and data pipeline processing, and Tableau for data visualization, especially for analytics purposes.

๐Ÿ”‘ Key-Value Databases: Netflix's trusted companion for over a decade is EVCache, built on top of Memcached. It's the go-to for caching various data, powering the Netflix Homepage, and delivering personalized recommendations.

๐Ÿ“š Wide-Column Databases: Cassandra takes the stage for almost everything, from Video/Actor information to User Data, Device details, and Viewing History.

๐ŸŽฎ Time-Series Databases: Netflix's innovation shines with Atlas, an open-source in-memory database designed for metrics storage and aggregation.

Unstructured Data: When it comes to storing Image/Video/Metrics/Log files, Netflix relies on S3 as the default choice. They also harness the power of Apache Iceberg with S3 for big data storage.

โš ๏ธ As a DevOps engineer, understanding Splunk commands is essential for effective log analysis and monitoring.

Here are some commonly used Splunk commands:

1. search: The primary command for searching data in Splunk. Use it to retrieve events based on specific criteria.

2. index: Specifies the index from which to retrieve data. You can filter data by index using this command.

3. source: Filters events based on the source of the data (e.g., log files, network streams).

4. sourcetype: Filters events based on the type of data source (e.g., Apache logs, Windows Event Logs).

5. eval: Creates calculated fields or modifies existing fields. Useful for creating custom fields or transforming data.

6. stats: Aggregates and summarizes data. You can use it to calculate counts, averages, and other statistics.

7. timechart: Generates time-based charts and visualizations. Useful for trend analysis and identifying patterns over time.

8. rex: Extracts fields using regular expressions. Helpful when dealing with unstructured data.

9. dedup: Removes duplicate events based on specified fields.

10. transaction: Groups related events into transactions. Useful for analyzing multi-step processes.

11. top: Identifies the top values for a specific field (e.g., top IP addresses, top error codes).

12. lookup: Enriches events by joining them with external lookup tables (e.g., mapping IP addresses to geolocation data).

Remember that these commands are just a starting point. Depending on your use case, you might need to explore additional commands and features. Happy Splunking! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ”

๐Ÿฑ Git can be confusing at first. But trust me, once you grasp the basics, it's a game-changer.

Here's a quick rundown:

โšก๏ธ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ฌ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ž: This is where you actually code. Simple.

Think of it as a prep area. You're telling Git, "Hey, these changes are important."

This is your personal save point. Commit often, thank yourself later.

The cloud where your team's code lives. This is where the collaboration magic happens.

Send your local commits to the remote repo.
Grab the latest changes from remote. It's actually fetch + merge in one go.
Download changes, but don't apply them yet.
Combine those fetched changes with your work.

โžก๏ธ How do companies ship code to production?

The diagram above illustrates the typical workflow.

โžก๏ธStep 1: The process starts with a product owner creating user stories based on requirements.

โžก๏ธStep 2: The dev team picks up the user stories from the backlog and puts them into a sprint for a two-week dev cycle.

โžก๏ธStep 3: The developers commit source code into the code repository Git.

โžก๏ธStep 4: A build is triggered in Jenkins. The source code must pass unit tests, code coverage threshold, and gates in SonarQube.

โžก๏ธStep 5: Once the build is successful, the build is stored in artifactory. Then the build is deployed into the dev environment.

โžก๏ธStep 6: There might be multiple dev teams working on different features. The features need to be tested independently, so they are deployed to QA1 and QA2.

โžก๏ธStep 7: The QA team picks up the new QA environments and performs QA testing, regression testing, and performance testing.

โžก๏ธSteps 8: Once the QA builds pass the QA teamโ€™s verification, they are deployed to the UAT environment.

โžก๏ธStep 9: If the UAT testing is successful, the builds become release candidates and will be deployed to the production environment on schedule.

โžก๏ธStep 10: SRE (Site Reliability Engineering) team is responsible for prod monitoring.
