Protesters in Rosslare have condemned a suspected arson attack on a forklift teleporter, valued at €80,000, at the site of the old Great Southern Hotel, reports the Sunday World.

The property, which has secured planning permission to be turned into a nursing home, is currently being developed as accommodation for asylum seekers.

The Department of Equality has stated that approximately 170 asylum-seekers are expected to arrive in Rosslare in the coming weeks. However, the hotel has the capacity to accommodate up to 400 individuals.

Locals have been objecting to the development for the past ten days with 2,000 out marching on Tuesday evening. They say the village is already at saturation point with 300 single male asylum seekers already being accommodated in the area.
