➡️ What's Proof-of-Work (PoW) Consensus and How does it Work?

PoW was introduced in the early '90s as a tool to fight email spam. Its idea was that a program would require some work to send an email. That work would be easy for a human, but hard for bot who sends mass emails.

The first one to Apply PoW in Crypto was Satoshi Nakamoto - Bitcoin creator. As a consensus mechanism, PoW confirms that network participants (miners) calculate valid alphanumeric codes (hashes) to verify Blockchain Transactions -> and add the next block to the Blockchain. It does so by having participants in the network verify that the required amount of computing power was used by miner (credited with calculating the valid hash).

📃💡 Mechanism was greatly described by W. Knottenbelt - DIR of Imperial College Centre for Cryptocurrency Research:

"Proof of work is how miners (block publishers) prove to the world that they have put in the necessary work to create a well-formed block of transactions to add to the blockchain." © W. Knottenbelt

➡️ What's Proof-of-Stake (PoS) Consensus and How does it Work?

Unlike PoW, PoS reduces the amount of computational work needed to verify blocks and transactions that keep the blockchain, and thus a cryptocurrency, secure.

Proof-of-stake changes the way blocks are verified using the machines of coin owners. The owners offer their coins as collateral for the chance to validate blocks. Coin owners with staked coins become "validators." To become a validator, a coin owner must "stake" a specific amount of coins. For instance, Ethereum will require 32 ETH to be staked before a user can become a validator.

➡️ What's better - Proof-of-Work or Proof-of-Stake?

PoW is well-tested and used in many blockchains. DDoS attacks on a blockchain employing PoW algorithm are impossible with today’s computing technology. However, high energy cost, increased strain on the environment, and low TPS will likely make it unviable in the long run.

PoS algorithm provides for a more scalable blockchain with higher transaction throughput, and a few projects have adopted it already, for e.g. DASH cryptocurrency. However, it’s less secure than the completely decentralized POW algorithm. It’s possible to buy a majority of the coins in the network, become the staker of choice, and validate wrong transactions as part of an attack. It’s also possible for a staker to turn rogue and validate wrong transactions.

Ethereum, as part of their planned transition to PoS, has designed the ‘Casper’ protocol where such rogue stakers will be punished by confiscating their staked cryptocurrencies and barring them from staking ever again. If the planned implementation of PoS in Ethereum goes well, the community will be confident in the PoS algorithm's ability to keep the network safe. This might tip the scales in favor of PoS.

⌛️ And only time will tell PoW or PoS will emerge as the Consensus of the Future.
