🇺🇸🫡Though he’s not on X, for the first day of Veterans Month, I want to honor a man I proudly call one of my first mentors, Michael Ricci.

He wasn’t just my high school English teacher. He shaped my understanding of life, sharing raw stories and hard-earned wisdom from his time in Vietnam. Through his example, I learned hard work, resilience, and the true essence of patriotism when I needed it most.

After graduating from St. Peter’s College in Jersey City, NJ, Michael was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. Just one week into training, the TET Offensive of 1968 sent him to Vietnam, where he led an infantry platoon with courage until severe wounds in May 1968 changed his path. Undeterred, he found healing in adaptive sports at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic, mastering adaptive skiing. This inspired him to launch Operation Beachhead in 2011, a program to empower disabled veterans and civilians through year-round sports. His belief in the healing power of activity, forged in his own youth and refined through service, shines brightly. Michael lives each day with thankfulness and wonder, pouring his heart into lifting others up. To me, he’s a hero whose selflessness and grit show us how to turn trials into triumph and dedicate a life to others.
