Compass Call
PART 2, T-72B
Let us move on to the optics. The main daytime sight remains the TPD‑K1, which is paired with the laser rangefinder and has an 8× zoom with a 9° field of view. The night sight is different from that of the T‑72A: it is the TPN3‑49, and it is paired, in the role of night viewer, with the 1K13‑49 sight for launching Svir missiles. Thus, the B variant (S for export) significantly increased night‑fighting capability, especially because the 1K13‑49 was a passive viewer, meaning the tank did not depend on the IR Luna searchlight, which would have made it extremely visible at night.

The 1A40‑1 fire‑control system, which includes the daytime sight, calculates the lead that the gunner must manually apply to hit a moving target. However, the absence of thermal sights, true ballistic computers, and new‑generation stabilizers made it noticeably less accurate than the Leopard 2 or the Abrams while moving, and the gap became enormous in night combat: the T‑72B would have great difficulty detecting a Leopard 2 at night with its passive viewer before the latter fired at it from very long distances thanks to its thermal sights.

Important improvements were made to the armament, with the 2A46M gun replacing the 2A46: a stiffer barrel, more resistant to pressure, allowing the firing of more powerful penetrators. In addition, it is screwed to the breech, meaning it can be easily replaced by unscrewing it from the outside. The new recoil guides further reduce dispersion. The result is a completely new barrel that guarantees very high accuracy.
The T‑72B is equipped with an electric motor for turret traverse (horizontal movement), although the hydraulic actuator for elevation is retained.

The tank could engage targets at 4–5 km using the Svir cannon‑launched anti‑tank missile, with an equivalent penetration of 700 mm RHA and a success probability of 80% (ODIN source), thanks precisely to the 1K13‑49 sight. The missile had a 4.2 kg shaped‑charge warhead and was guided through beam riding, meaning the tank had to maintain the line of sight on the target for the entire duration of the flight. It could penetrate the frontal armor of an M1 Abrams or a Leopard 2A1.
In beam‑riding guidance, the missile flies within a laser beam and has a rear‑facing sensor that determines whether the missile is centered in the beam emitted by the tank or deviating, and corrects its trajectory accordingly.

SCORPION PROGRAM 🇫🇷
🇬🇧As part of the modernization of European armies, the French SCORPION It is perhaps the most successful program.—an acronym for Synergie du contact renforcée par la polyvalence et l’infovalorisation. While it is a vehicle renewal program, it is heavily focused on the concept of "Network-Centric Warfare" and the proliferation of airborne and ground-based sensors. Communication and the sharing of data gathered by each vehicle create a real-time model capable of providing a commanding officer with a "transparent" view of the battlefield. The officer can then use this information with the subordinate units to make decisions and execute maneuvers much more easily than before. This enables a battalion (or *GTIA*) equipped with these vehicles to remain dispersed across a vast area, concentrating its forces at the point of main effort only when necessary, before dispersing again. This doctrine is the French "Economy of Force", is becoming increasingly critical given the evolution of modern warfare, as unit assembly and staging points are becoming ever easier to detect and target. At the same time, the commanding officer can monitor the results of maneuvers, thanks to the multiple sensors integrated into each new vehicle. Each vehicle in the platoon shares information with other vehicles and subsequently with command. By triangulating enemy positions, enemy contacts and other data gathered by various sensors, both optical and non-optical, a comprehensive tactical picture is created. The program thus aims not only to replace an aging vehicle fleet but also to establish and consolidate a robust French industrial base capable of rapidly producing large quantities of these vehicles. It is important to highlight the French determination to have a program capable of rapidly developing, building, and replacing the older vehicles. It represents a significant step toward the French Army's strategic independence from other nations regarding military procurement. Having begun vehicle deliveries in 2019, the program has already achieved international success, with Belgium, Luxembourg, and Croatia purchasing equipment from the SCORPION lineup.
VBMR-GRIFFON & VBMR-L-SERVAL 🇫🇷
🇬🇧The information system is deployed across the following platforms: Caesar, Leclerc, VBMR Griffon, VBMR-L Serval, EBRC Jaguar, and upgraded versions of the VBCI and VAB. In addition to these ground vehicles, the system integrates FPV drones and larger UAVs, such as the SDT Patroller, equipped with ISTAR capabilities. Furthermore, satellite communication links are integrated into a series of command vehicles connected directly to the French Syracuse IV satellite constellation. The backbone of short-to-medium-range communication between vehicles is provided by the CONTACT (COMmunications Numériques TACtiques et de Théâtre) system, a suite of shared communication technologies used by the Navy, Air Force, and Army. Meanwhile, the SICS system enables commanders to access real-time information, audio communications, and data from various sensors, as previously mentioned. This system integrates with analogous used by other branches, such as the artillery's ATLAS and the aviation branch's SIT-ALAT. As noted, this is an information system designed to provide data; the final decision always rests with the human operator. The first units to be equipped with this system were the GTIA—highly modular French battalion-level formations capable of integrating all Army specialties. They demonstrated great flexibility, operational capabilities and power-projection capabilities during the recent Operation Serval in Mali. The acronym stands for *Groupement tactique interarmes* (Combined Arms Tactical Group); it is an independent combat group capable of conducting overseas operations, complete with its own air and logistics components. The SCORPION variant equips the aforementioned new-generation vehicles with the unified SICS information system. These wheeled vehicles are highly adaptable to modular configurations and are designed for efficient transport by French A400M aircraft, making them a significant asset for the missions France anticipated conducting in remote regions like the Sahel. There are three original vehicles in the program: Serval, Griffon, and Jaguar.
🇮🇹 Il sistema informativo è quindi disposto sui seguenti mezzi: Caesar, Lecler, VBMR Griffon , VBMR-L Serval , EBRC Jaguar, VBCI (aggiornati) e VAB (aggiornati).
SICS Sistem 🇫🇷
🇬🇧Briefly these three vehicles are taking the place previously held by the VAB and AMX-10RC. The Serval is a 15-ton, multi-role, "light" 4x4 armored troop transport; the Griffon is a 25-ton, multi-role, 6x6 armored troop transport; and the Jaguar is a 25-ton armored reconnaissance and combat vehicle. These vehicles equip the French Army's mechanized and reconnaissance units. Furthermore, thanks to their modular design, they integrate specialized capabilities directly into the unit structure. They fill the roles such as SIGINT, EW, ISTAR, Counter-UAV, SHORAD, casualty evacuation, artillery support (via the Griffon MEPAC mortar variant), communications nodes, and command posts. Developing a family of three vehicles for diverse roles using interchangeable components achieves significant industrial and logistical simplification. To illustrate this modularity and versatility, consider the Serval: it can be configured with Mistral MANPADS, a 30mm cannon (with associated radar) to engage drones, and Hornet remote-controlled turrets mounting .50-caliber machine guns and 40mm grenade launchers. Additionally, all vehicles are equipped with the GALIX smoke-screening system (when fitted with the Hornet turret), which generates a screen capable of masking the vehicle from both visual and thermal optics. Taking the Griffon as another example, equipping it with the Hornet turret provides a suite that includes night-vision sensors, a laser and missile warning system, and the GALIX system. This enhances survivability, alongside add-on external armor kits, resistance to 10 kg of TNT (from mines and IEDs), and the inclusion of "spall liners", metal plates designed to absorb shrapnel from projectiles or explosions. If a vehicle comes under fire, the rest of the “GTIA” is alerted via the SICS system; another vehicle can then automatically engage the threat or deploy its own smoke discharges to create an additional screen. The vehicle design prioritizes battlefield mobility and maneuverability over heavy armor protection. Production capacity has tripled since the program began—rising from 92 to 300 vehicles annually—and currently stands at approximately one vehicle per day; KNDS has stated it is ready to ramp up production to 450 vehicles over a 12-month period. To date, approximately 700 Griffon and 300 Serval vehicles have been delivered to the French Army, along with 91 Jaguar vehicles.
All’incirca 700 Griffon e 300 Serval sono stati consegnati all’esercito Francese con altri 91 Jaguar.
🇬🇧The total cost of the program is currently estimated at between €10 billion and €11 billion, with further orders and innovations. In terms of individual unit costs, a Griffon is estimated at €1.5 million, a Serval at €900,000, and an EBRC Jaguar at €6 million. Beyond the vehicles and communication systems, the program includes other acquisitions, such as Hornet turrets, Akeron MP ATGMs, and various other systems. These vehicles were clearly designed for use against both conventional adversaries and in counter-insurgency operations, such as those in former French colonies. In 2021, the system successfully underwent trials in Djibouti, following transport via A400M, and subsequently saw service during Operation Barkhane in the Sahel. From an industrial and technological standpoint, the program can be considered a success, thanks to the high level of technology integrated into the vehicles and the scale of their production. The concepts of network-centric warfare and high vehicle mobility remain central; together, they form a perfect combination for maneuver warfare.
🇮🇹
