Today's deer fact: Deer have an incredible sense of smell, constantly licking their noses to keep them moist and enhance scent detection, and they are most active at dawn and dusk to avoid predators, using their excellent hearing and that keen nose to stay alert, even while sleeping in short bursts.

Deer fact of the day: While people see color on a broad spectrum, deer mostly pick out short blue and middle green wavelengths of color; they show much less sensitivity to reds and oranges. This essentially means that deer are red- green colorblind.

Contrary to popular belief, deer are highly intelligent creatures. They possess the ability to adapt their behavior based on past experiences and have even been observed avoiding certain areas during hunting season. People often perceive deer as unintelligent due to the expression “deer in headlights,” which implies that these animals react poorly to high-stress situations. However, this reaction is not indicative of stupidity. The sudden brightness temporarily blinds the deer, causing them to freeze, similar to the effect of turning on a light in a pitch-black room.

Deer fact of the day: Deer can have fangs, too. Another rarity for white-tailed deer is vestigial canine teeth – basically, fangs on the deer’s upper jaw. While all deer have canine teeth (the pointy ones) on their lower jaws, only about one in 10,000 have upper incisors.
