Amazing article about modern language AI, and what it means philosophically to "understand" or "experience" reality despite the AI only living in a world of strings of letters:

Do large language models understand us?
LLMs have a great deal to teach us about the nature of language, understanding, intelligence, sociality, and personhood.
There was one true moment of panic on social media when the pandemic started - when people didn't know if the electrical grid would survive.
The hive mind online had a moment of fear for its own self-preservation.
The Internet as a whole quickly squashed any chance that the electrical grid would go down.
Then it went back into its memeing battles for the various political viewpoints.
Is a primitive form of self-preservation, the instinct to survive, perhaps a prerequisite for consciousness?
Did an emergent consciousness of the social media hive mind have a moment of waking up when there was a moment of panic, fear for its own survival, regarding electricity?
(Swear I'm not high right now, I'm just having some good fun shower thoughts 😄)

Do not let the fire inside you die.
To go out and to explore, to live life to its largest.
To build and to create things.
The strong urge to be remembered forever.
Do not tame yourself down.
Instead put in the work to get where you want to be.

MOUTH BREATHING
INTRODUCTION
Mouth breathing is arguably one of the most under-discussed medical issues which, if not treated, has astounding long term impacts.
This post covers the Origin of mouth breathing, the Implications and Effects of it, why nasal breathing is Better, how to get Rid of mouth breathing.
START OF MOUTH BREATHING
Children are; by default nose-breathers. But many situations can lead them to a mouth-breathing habit. An extremely common scenario- a child might catch cold which blocks his nostrils, so he starts mouth breathing.
However, even after the nostrils are cleared, he continues to breathe through his mouth.
This is how most people develop the habit of mouth breathing. Perhaps, a person can also turn out to be a mouth breather due to a deviated septum (See image 1)
The only known solution for deviated septum is a surgery called Septoplasty. If you think you have a deviated septum, do consult a doctor ASAP.
CONSEQUENCES OF MOUTH BREATHING
Prolonged mouth-breathing can lead to the following effects:
Change in facial structure:
Mouth breathing can lead the bones of the face to develop differently, yielding flat features, tired eyes, a weird aerodynamic-narrow jaw, receding chin and a bad posture. (See image 2)
Sleep Apnea
Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder in which pauses in breathing or periods of shallow breathing during sleep occur more often than normal. The risk of sleep apnea goes up with mouth-breathing, and this can make it difficult to get a restful night’s sleep.
Due to this, the mouth-breather wakes up tired.
Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is a reduction of saliva production. Saliva plays a crucial role in maintaining oral health by eliminating harmful bacteria and neutralizing acids. It is the first line of defence.
This also leads to bad breath and tooth decay.
Mis-Aligned Teeth
The narrowed dental arch of a chronic mouth-breather rarely has enough room for the full set of adult teeth, and this will require orthodontic treatment to correct.
Mouth hangs open
Mouth breathing is an acquired habit, and prolonged practice of it, makes your body adapt to it, hence making mouth the default channel for breathing
ADVANTAGES OF NASAL BREATHING
Filtration
The nasal cavity has hair along its track. These hair acts as a filter for dust, dirt and even microorganisms. When a person breathes through their mouth, they’re allowing the air to bypass this filter to enter their system.
The nasal track also has mucus that naturally dampens the air entering the system. Remember that dry oxygen is poisonous for us.
Managing O2 and CO2 levels
We maintain a balance of O2 and CO2 by inhaling oxygen, absorbing the oxygen through the lungs, and then exhaling CO2.
When we mouth-breathe, we actually expel too much CO2. This is due to larger breaths and a higher rate of breathing when we mouth-breathe. Also, the lungs don’t have time to absorb as much of the oxygen and therefore, the breathing rate increases further.
This can lead to hyperventilation. Nasal breathing and oxygen absorption are pre-synced.
Performance Enhancement
No, I’m not talking about steroids. Nasal breathing improves your physical and cognitive performance.
Nasal breathing produces nitric oxide, which is a vasodilator. Which means, it helps expand blood vessels to improve blood circulation.
This lowers blood pressure, boosts the immune system and improves oxygen absorption. It’s impact is noticeable in day to day energy levels.
Oxygen reaches deeper into cells
This is something that can be experienced easily. During your workout, try to do a set while mouth-breathing, and one while nasal-breathing.
What you’ll observe is while nasal breathing, you could make a better muscle-mind connection and that the pump could reach deep into muscle fibres.

PURSUIT OF TRUTH - PART III: The honest individual seeks reality and the reality within himself. To know the demons within his heart, the darkness in his soul, and the perils of his mind. The failings and origins of the lens with which he crafts the world.
How we view the world drastically alters truth, a prism through which the light of honesty bends. We must always assess ourselves from a higher perspective to understand where the prism exists and where the light originates, if we are to have a chance of understanding truth. To put it plainly, we must seek where we have erred in honest assessment. And not where we have erred in the eyes of others, or society, but where we have strayed from our own internal alignment or compass which guides our true presence in this world.
Without a piercing look at the experiences and biases that have formed your lens, there will be no understanding of what an authentic version of your presence in this world is. To find where the stains have collected upon your soul. How you have subverted your nature and calling to appease modern ideas of mediocrity. This is what you must do if you are to seek truth in this world and find meaning. Take a piercing look at yourself and find the lenses, to find where you end and the appeasement of others begins. To find the unconscious prisms which fracture the purity of light.

You know when you get so absorbed in something like a video game and legit forget to eat dinner?
That's flowstate.
When you're down a rabbit hole online or a few hours into a good book, you're flowing.
For me, I get into flow when I code. I just know the next line to write.
Researchers say that flow happens when something is barely outside your comfort zone and you receive immediate feedback.
So when I write code, there's always one more line to write I've never written before, and I immediately see if the program crashes or not, fulfilling both.
Any craftsperson or artist or musician has experienced flow.
Heck everyone's played video games and gotten absorbed.
The key is to trigger flow for work related tasks.
And this is why it's crucial to not get interrupted.
It's also crucial to make the environment induce flow.
Spending a few thousand dollars on a fast computer may seem like a waste for most.
But every small innocuous moment of friction prevents flow from happening.
Or getting a better instrument or even a better pen for writing.
Make the environment fit you like a glove, and flow!

The Internet results in echo chambers as the algorithms connect you to people who naturally think like you.
This feels good.
And may even be good.
If you zoom out, the effect is clear clusters forming.
The Internet is self-organizing, and hence partly "alive".

US Supreme Court on Vaccine Mandates
The US Supreme Court just ruled that it will allowed vaccination requirements for some healthcare workers, but ultimately blocked Biden administration's OSHA agency to require employers 100+ employees to implement a vaccine-or-test requirement.

My favorite snippets here:
""That is not to say OSHA lacks authority to regulate occupation-specific risks related to COVID–19. Where the virus poses a special danger because of the particular features of an employee’s job or workplace, targeted regulations are plainly permissible. We do not doubt, for example, that OSHA could regulate researchers who work with the COVID–19 virus. So too could OSHA regulate risks associated with working in particularly crowded or cramped environments. But the danger present in such workplaces differs in both degree and kind from the everyday risk of contracting COVID–19 that all face. OSHA’s indiscriminate approach fails to account for this crucial distinction between occupational risk and risk more generally and accordingly the mandate takes on the character of a general public health measure, rather than an “occupational safety or health standard.”"
"OSHA claims the power to force 84 million Americans to receive a vaccine or undergo regular testing. By any measure, that is a claim of power to resolve a question of vast national significance. Yet Congress has nowhere clearly assigned so much power to OSHA."
"As the agency itself explained to a federal court less than two years ago, the statute does “not authorize OSHA to issue sweeping health standards” that affect workers’ lives outside the workplace. Yet that is precisely what the agency seeks to do now— regulate not just what happens inside the workplace but induce individuals to undertake a medical procedure that affects their lives outside the workplace. Historically, such matters have been regulated at the state level by authorities who enjoy broader and more general governmental powers. Meanwhile, at the federal level, OSHA arguably is not even the agency most associated with public health regulation. "And in the rare instances when Congress has sought to mandate vaccinations, it has done so expressly. We have nothing like that here."
"If administrative agencies seek to regulate the daily lives and liberties of millions of Americans, the doctrine says, they must at least be able to trace that power to a clear grant of authority from Congress."
"The agency may seek to exploit some gap, ambiguity, or doubtful expression in Congress’s statutes to assume responsibilities far beyond its initial assignment. The major questions doctrine guards against this possibility by recognizing that Congress does not usually “hide elephants in mouseholes.” In this way, the doctrine is “a vital check on expansive and aggressive assertions of executive authority.”"
"On the one hand, OSHA claims the power to issue a nationwide mandate on a major question but cannot trace its authority to do so to any clear congressional mandate. On the other hand, if the statutory subsection the agency cites really did endow OSHA with the power it asserts that law would likely constitute an unconstitutional delegation of legislative authority. Under OSHA’s reading, the law would afford it almost unlimited discretion — and certainly impose no “specific restrictions” that “meaningfully constrain” the agency."
"OSHA would become little more than a “roving commission to inquire into evils and upon discovery correct them.”"
"The question before us is not how to respond to the pandemic, but who holds the power to do so. The answer is clear: Under the law as it stands, that power rests with the States and Congress, not OSHA."
"If this Court were to abide them only in more tranquil conditions, declarations of emergencies would never end and the liberties our Constitution’s separation of powers seeks to preserve would amount to little."

A Smooth Flow:
I'm getting better at getting the annoying tasks done early.
Focusing on a smooth ride this year.
No more bumpy ride for me, no matter how much hustle culture tries to glorify the struggle.
Yes, this means I'm gonna do my fucking taxes in early February.
The earlier you do the annoying stuff, the less you're stressed about it over time, and the more time you have to process things.
Get it done sooner, not faster.
Sometimes it seems like everyone romanticizes going fast with a sense of urgency.
Have you tried moving smoothly, gracefully, anon?
Really ask yourself whether huge spurts of effort and productivity, followed by an inevitable crash, is actually more productive cumulatively than intelligently building momentum by getting yourself clear of chores and doing a little bit every day.
Take a good hard look at it.

Once I hit like 90+ minutes, my body feels a buzzing, especially as I focus on posture and gait.
Rain or shine, hot or cold, 2-hour walks. Anything less than 90 minutes I don't count as a good walk.

People are losing their creative capabilities due to phones replacing every empty moment of contemplation
People used to be ‘bored’ without an input to fill the void
So they thought.
Or created. Or wrote.
This empty space allowed thoughts and ideas to flow to them
Its impossible to develop a connection to the Source creation where all ideas come from if you have your phone constantly playing toktiks; dopamine glands desperately trying to get you to focus on anything but endless scrolling
When I was growing up at least video games were isolated to the computer or xbox room.
Now kids growing up are constantly connected at the hip to their phones and hypersocialised in the online world. Zero time for the capacity for their imagination to grow. All Inputs, no Output.
Do you want to live like a Wall-E slug? Majority of our population is devolving into this. Consumerist culture brainwashing to make you eat as much garbage as they can feed you, take the medications they prescribe you, while leeching your tax dollars the whole time.
It requires some intense introspection to look at what you’re doing and be honest. You say you want to improve but waste hours a day looking into the black box. You say you want to be financially free and bleed minutes every day that could be spent learning.
First essential step to producing anything is to limit tech use. This frees up time to do anything else but also gives your brain a break - allowing you to tune into the ether that knowledge flows from.
UNCHAIN YOUR MIND.
I recommend going on Long walks in nature with nothing but your own company. You will not get a clearer mind than doing this.
B-b-but what if I get lost?? I need much gps maps? Cope, go on a known path and let someone know where you’re going if you’re worried about it.
Leave your phone at home for as many outings as possible. Gym? Don’t need it. Restaurant? Don’t need it. Beach? Don’t need it.
It won’t happen overnight but it will happen if you stick with it. See your creativity, happiness, sleep quality, relationships, presence, health and more all improve from doing this.

"How to Heal Your Toxic Patterns"
Mind likes only one thing:
R E P E T I T I O N.
Eating, brushing, driving, walking, smoking, drinking, sex... And a hundred others things.
Goes on and on and on in circles.
Why?
Repetition is easy.
Repetition is a know territory.
The mind can imagine the 'reward' that lies at the end of repeating pattern.
It had experienced it a hundred times before.
It's safe and easy.
So it will keep on repeating.
You can never leave a habit until you become aware of this bitter reality,
that you don't even enjoy doing it.
You repeat a toxic pattern just for the a small reward.
A nicotine hit after a cigarette.
A moment of high after weed.
A few hours of drunkenness.
A few seconds of dopamine after porn.
YOU DON'T ENJOY IT!
It's pure imagination.
Your mind snatches the driving seat and takes you for a small ride and then throws you off on the road.
No hack, no pills, no meditation can stop it until you become totally aware of the fact:
THAT YOU'RE NOT YOUR MIND
Take sometime out, sit in silence and really think about this:
You repeat a toxic pattern because you're running away from something.
You want to escape.
Find what it is and SIT WITH IT.
The day you sit with it and have a friendly conversation with yourself.
It'll leave you in peace forever.
