Revised Formal Request to the Apostolic Nunciature in Damascus

Subject: Humanitarian Mediation for the Repatriation of Mr. Max van den Berg
Your Eminence,
We humbly address Your Eminence regarding the detention of a Dutch citizen, Mr. Max van den Berg, held by the Syrian authorities since February 15, 2026.
Mr. Van den Berg is a peaceful participant in Dutch civic life and a formal candidate for the local elections in Winterswijk, scheduled for March 18, 2026. His presence in the Syrian Arab Republic was motivated by a personal desire to witness the historic transitions in the region and to visit sites of shared religious history in the whole Middle Eastern region.
We are concerned that certain linguistic and cultural misunderstandings may have occurred. Specifically, the mention of the name Jezus and also the nickname Ilyas — a figure deeply respected in both the Christian and Islamic traditions—was intended solely as a gesture of profound respect for the local heritage and the common roots of our faiths. It was in no way a political statement or a challenge to the established order or Islamic values of the State.
Given the Holy See’s unique and respected position in Damascus, we respectfully implore Your Eminence to:
Assess Well-being: Inquire into the humanitarian condition and mental health of Mr. Van den Berg, as the stress of his journey may have led to expressions that do not reflect his true, peaceful intentions.
Clarify Intentions: Convey to the Transitional Government that Mr. Van den Berg is a member of a registered, non-violent Dutch political group Oranje Republikeinse Democratische Alliantie / Oranje Republikeinse Piraten and affiliated groups as the International and national Pirate Party and Forum voor Democracy / Democratie, Libertaire Party (known of former US president candidate and very famous Ron Paul in the USA), as well former member of the group ("Jezus Leeft") that advocates solely for peace and moral values within the Netherlands.
Facilitate Repatriation: Mediate for his return to the Netherlands on humanitarian grounds, so he may fulfil his civic duties and participate in the democratic process on March 18.
We trust in the Nunciature’s diplomatic wisdom to resolve this matter through the spirit of interfaith compassion.
