How Chinese BRI is loosing its charm?

[1] One of the reasons the BRI’s charms have dimmed is China’s own slowing economy and Beijing’s unwillingness to be as generous with its loans in the second half of the decade, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic.

[2] Another is the discomfort in many countries over the terms for the loans, which involve hiring Chinese companies and engaging Chinese workers, while often demanding heavy collateral, as Sri Lanka found out after losing control of the Hambantota port.

[3] The U.S.’s heavy lobbying against the BRI has also had some effect: Italy’s Giorgia Melloni announced in December 2023 that it would not renew the BRI MoU. The Brazilian Foreign Adviser’s statement follows a visit by U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai who asked Brazil to think carefully through an “objective lens” before signing on to the BRI. The remarks raised a protest from the Chinese Embassy in Brasilia which called them “disrespectful” of Brazil’s sovereign right to choose its partners.'

Significance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) for India

[1] Thwart to China’s BRI: IMEC is seen as a potential counter to China's BRI in the Eurasian region. It can serve to counterbalance China's growing economic and political influence. It would help India in balancing China efficiently without much investments.

[2] Exploring West Asia: After economic liberalization in 1991, India largely explored East Asia through Look East policy followed by Act East policy. Now, it is providing opportunity to extend cooperation beyond balancing west Asia.

[3] Potential strategic Role in Africa: The corridor's model could be extended to Africa, aligning with the US and EU's plan to develop a Trans-African corridor. It signifies India's intent to strengthen its engagement with Africa.

[4] Deepening relations with USA: It dispels the notion that India and the United States may collaborate in the Indo-Pacific but not in the Middle East. The project showcases how India and the U.S., along with Israel and the UAE, can partner in developing joint economic projects through forums like the I2U2.

[5] Bypassing neighbourhood syndrome: It would help in bypassing Pakistan’s veto over India’s overland connectivity to the Central Asia. It is so because Jabel Ali port in UAE is near to Chahbahar port developed in Iran with India's assistance. It may help in further connecting central Asia.

Why did the U.S. impose a travel ban on Bhutan?

The U.S. government has cited "national security concerns" and "irregular migration patterns" as the primary reasons for adding Bhutan to the travel ban list. According to official sources, there has been an unexpected increase in Bhutanese nationals overstaying their visas or attempting to enter the U.S. through unauthorized channels. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) reported a 37% rise in Bhutanese visa violations in the past year, prompting stricter measures.

US VP JD Vance in Munich Security Conference 2025

⏹️ U.S. Vice President JD Vance's speech criticized European approaches to democracy and free speech, suggesting ideological divergences between the U.S. and Europe.

⏹️ He argued that Europe's challenges stem from internal issues, including multiculturalism and migration, and accused European elites of limiting freedom of speech.

⏹️ European leaders, such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and opposition leader Friedrich Merz, rebuffed these claims, defending Europe's democratic values. This exchange underscored a growing rift within the transatlantic alliance.

Why Ukraine is not happy with Trump's truce deal?

[1] Sovereignty & Territorial Integrity – Ukraine refuses to surrender its internationally recognized territories (Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson), which Russia has illegally annexed.

[2] National Security – Ending the war without clear security guarantees could leave Ukraine vulnerable to future Russian aggression. If Ukraine stops fighting now without NATO or strong defense agreements, Russia could regroup and attack again.

[3] Public and Political Will – Ukrainian leadership and society overwhelmingly reject territorial concessions. Polls show that most Ukrainians oppose giving up land for peace.

[4] War Crimes & Justice – Ukraine has suffered immense civilian casualties, war crimes, and destruction. Many Ukrainians want accountability for Russian crimes rather than a peace deal that allows Russia to escape consequences.

[5] Precedent for Global Order – If Russia wins by force, it sets a dangerous precedent for other aggressor nations. Many in the international community see this as a fight for the rules-based world order.

In the politically challenging situation in Bangladesh, India may take five measures to maintain its interests

[1] First, diplomacy is not always about making statements and taking one side or the other. Staying mute, making general statements or selective mutism are also effective ways to deal with severe political crises. Bangladesh’s unrest is one of those situations where mutism or selective mutism is required.

[2] Secondly, To deal with such existing anti-India sentiments, a changed Indian policy towards Bangladesh must have enough space to engage with the different important political actors and civil society leaders.

[3] Thirdly, It is unclear how long the interim government will be in power. Also, how effective and decisive will Yunus be in the interim government? Hence, India should wait until a clear political picture emerges in Dhaka.

[4] Fourthly, India's significance in Bangladesh’s economy and presence in the everyday life of many Bangladeshis, anyone in charge of the affairs in Dhaka cannot afford to maintain distance from New Delhi for a long time. He/she will eventually have to engage with India. Therefore, strategic patience is required.

[5] Fifthly, India is paying a political price for highly depending on Hasina. India should bide its time and keep its diplomatic options open to engage with the new government without any baggage and with a fresh mind.
A true story: In 1957, the then Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, visiting the office of General Thimayya, the Chief of the Army Staff, saw a steel cabinet behind his desk and asked the general what it contained. The general replied that the top drawer contained the nation’s defence plans. And the second drawer contained the confidential files of the nation’s top generals. And what about the third drawer, enquired Nehru. Ah, said the general with a straight face, the third drawer contains my secret plans for a military coup against you. Nehru laughed, but there was apparently a tinge of nervousness to his laughter.
