🔥 Expansion of BRICS 🔥

BRICS summit 2023: The decision to invite six countries - Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE - to join BRICS as full members and keep its doors open for further expansion has opened a new era. This was initially driven by China with the backing of Russia and South Africa. But once India and Brazil accepted the principle of expansion, the choice of six new members was based on consensus.

Is the expansion good for BRICS? Its leaders think so. The new BRICS-XI will have more political clout, but the extent of its increased influence will depend on building inner unity.

Why were these six countries chosen?
[1] Argentina was brought in to expand Latin American representation.

[2] Egypt, given its excellent ties with China and India, was a natural choice.

[3] Ethiopia was a surprise, the result of a compromise between the claims of Nigeria and Kenya.

[4] The inclusion of Saudi Arabia and the UAE will help in recapitalisation of the New Development Bank, enhancing its capacity to finance development projects.

[5] Iran’s entry reaffirms its strategic location as a bridge between West, Central and South Asia.

What are the main causes of Manipur violence?

(1) Historical factor: Britain has been engaged in bringing Christian character through missionaries to North East. That's why it stopped Indigenous people to go there through ILP but allowed missionaries.

(2) Depriving Meiteis: After independence, Meiteis were not granted ST status and were enjoying ST status before independence even though the Kind of Manipur princely state requested pundit Nehru.

(3) Govt steps: In 1967, rules have been made for not allowing Meiteis to buy property in 90% of the areas where Naga and Kukis live.

(4) External factors: Pakistan's ISI and China have been actively engaged in North East to destabilize it.

(5) Illegal infiltration: The Chin community from Myanmar illegally entered India and started poppy cultivation by exploiting the special administrative power granted to Nagas and Kukis.

What are challenges with anti-defection law in India?

[1] Curtail freedom (It even applies to the Rajya Sabha and Legislative Councils, which have no say in the stability of the government. They have to blindly follow the direction of the party.)

[2] Against the concept of representative democracy (It makes the MP neither a delegate of the constituency nor a national legislator but converts them to be just an agent of the party.)

[3] Hollowing out legislature (If an MP has no freedom to take decisions on policy and legislative proposals, what would be the incentive to put in the effort to understand the different policy choices and their outcomes?)

[4] Weakens accountability mechanism (Dr. Ambedkar in constituent assembly outlined the differences between the presidential and parliamentary forms of government. Unlike presidential form, we enjoys higher accountability. The anti-defection bill weakens the accountability mechanism.)

[5] Inducing instability (The political system has found ways to topple governments. E.g. Manipur, Uttrakhand)
