The earliest known reference to YHWH the God of Israel that can be securely dated and that the majority of scholars agree is genuine occurs on the Mesha Stele, which dates to around 840 BC, over two thousand years later. The Mesha Stele (known in 19th Century as the Moabite Stone) is a black basalt stone in Jordan bearing an inscription made in the 9th Century BC by King Mesha of the Moabites.

The inscription, dating to 840 BC, commemorates Mesha's victories over "Omri king of Israel" and his son, who had oppressed the Moabites. It is the longest inscription ever found referring to ancient Israel ("House of Omri"). It contains what is generally considered to be the earliest extra-biblical Semitic reference to the name Yahweh (YHWH), whose temple goods Mesha plundered and handed over to his own god Chemosh. French scholar André Lemaire reconstructed part of line 31 of the stele, arguing that it is a reference to the

The stone is 124cm high and 71cm wide and deep, rounded at the top. It was discovered on the site of ancient Dibone (Dhiban), in August 1868 by the Reverend Frederick Augustus Klein (1827–1903), a German missionary of the Church Mission Society. Local villagers broke it during a dispute over its ownership, but a sketch (a papier-mâché cast) was obtained by Charles Simon Clermont-Ganneau, and many of the fragments were later recovered and reunited by Clermont-Ganneau. The sketch (never published) and reassembled stele are now on display at the Louvre, Paris.

Dynasty Rulers: The dynasty included Omri, his son Ahab (who married the Phoenician princess Jezebel), Ahaziah, and Jehoram (Joram), as well as Judean Queen Athaliah through marriage alliances.

Biblical Portrayal: The biblical authors in the Books of Kings condemn the House of Omri harshly, accusing them of religious apostasy, promoting Baal worship, and doing "more evil than all those before him" (1 Kings 16:25–26). Their rule is closely tied to the conflicts with the prophets Elijah and Elisha.

Fall of the Dynasty: The dynasty ended violently around 841 BCE when Jehu led a coup, executing Jehoram, Jezebel, and the remaining royal family (2 Kings 9–10).

Five Assyrian records are known to refer to either "Land of Omri" or "House of Omri".[3][4][5] An archaeological reference to Omri and his unnamed son is found in the Mesha Stele, the only Northwest Semitic inscription known to reference this name. According to the Bible, the Omride rulers of Israel were Omri, Ahab, Ahaziah and Jehoram. Ahab's daughter Athaliah also became queen regnant of the Kingdom of Judah

Overall, the Bible portrays the Omrides as apostates, who abandoned Yahwismfor Baal worship. In terms of foreign policy, they dealt with troublesome neighbors, such as Aram-Damascus and Moab, and allied with the Kingdom of Judah via marriage.
