The Pillars of Hercules is an ancient phrase used to describe the two promontories (mountainous capes) that flank the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. They mark the boundary between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

On July 22, several faith traditions observe significant holy days. Christianitycelebrates the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, honoring the early follower of Jesus and "first herald of the Resurrection". Additionally, Judaism begins observing Tisha B'Av at sundown, a solemn 25-hour period of fasting and mourning that remembers the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem.
The celebration of the Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene began in the early centuries of the Church, but its modern liturgical status has evolved significantly over time:
Ancient Beginctions: Devotion to Mary Magdalene dates back to the first centuries. In the East, her commemoration on July 22nd was established very early, while the Western Church widely adopted the July 22nd date around the 8th to 10th centuries.
Liturgical Reforms: The calendar date was firmly reinforced during the Catholic liturgical revisions of 1969.
Elevation to "Feast" Rank: Most recently, on June 10, 2016, Pope Francis elevated her celebration from a mandatory "Memorial" to a formal Liturgical Feast. This change elevated her liturgical status to match that of the male Apostles, incorporating special prayers and the singing of the Gloria during Mass.
