🇪🇹 WHO 2026 REPORT: DOCTORS’ SALARIES IN AFRICA VS ETHIOPIA’S REALITY

According to the WHO’s State of the Health Workforce in Africa 2026 report, median annual remuneration (adjusted for purchasing power parity) in the African countries studied was:
🔹 General practitioners: $23,265/year
🔹 Medical specialists: $38,363/year

In contrast, estimates suggest that Ethiopian public-sector GPs earn around $1,500 annually, while specialists earn around $1,800. These estimates are not directly comparable with the WHO’s PPP-adjusted figures, but they highlight a serious concern about doctors’ financial security.

📊 What about purchasing power?
According to Numbeo’s 2026 data, Ethiopia’s local purchasing power index is just 12.5, compared with 35.9 in Kenya and 73.4 in Namibia.

📉 Low remuneration, rising living costs, and limited financial security threaten doctors’ livelihoods and may accelerate physician migration and workforce shortages.

Ethiopia needs a fair, transparent, and sustainable remuneration system that reflects doctors’ training, responsibilities, working conditions, and cost of living.

Doctors are essential to the health system. Their compensation should reflect that reality.
