📒 Fertig vs. Bereit

Today, I’m explaining the difference between two words that both translate to "ready" in English but have distinct uses in German.

1️⃣ Fertig means "completed, finished."
A synonym for "fertig" is "erledigt."

Remember, when "fertig" is used before a noun, it is paired with the preposition "mit," resulting in the phrase "fertig mit etwas sein."
Examples:
📍 Ich bin mit dem Gespräch fertig. - I have finished the conversation.
📍 Ich bin mit der Vorbereitung fast fertig. - I am almost done with the preparations.
📍 Ist sie mit dem Kochen schon fertig? - Has she finished cooking?

Expressions with "fertig" indicate being worn out (emotionally) or looking worn out:
Examples:
📍 Meine Nachbarn machen mich fertig. - My neighbors are driving me crazy.
📍 Mein Chef macht mich fertig. - My boss is wearing me out.
📍 Du siehst fertig aus. - You look exhausted.

The adverb "fertig" can also reflect physical tiredness when used with "von + Dat":
Examples:
📍 Ich bin völlig fertig vom Sport. - I'm totally exhausted from sports.

2️⃣ Bereit means "ready, prepared."
Examples:
📍 Sind Sie für die Prüfung bereit? - Are you ready for the exam?
📍 Ja, ich bin für die Prüfung bereit. - Yes, I am ready.

When using "bereit," remember that it often involves splitting the sentence into a main part and an infinitive construction.
Examples:
📍 Ich bin bereit in den Urlaub zu fahren. - I am ready to go on vacation.
📍 Sie ist bereit mir zu helfen. - She is ready to help me.
📍 Sind Sie bereit so früh aufzustehen? - Are you ready to get up so early?
📍 Bist du bereit diese Versammlung durchzuführen? - Are you ready to conduct this meeting?

Other ways to use "bereit" include combining it with infinitive constructions or with "für + Akkusativ" or "zu + Dativ":
📍 Ich bin für die Prüfung bereit - I am ready for the exam.
📍 Er ist zu der Heirat bereit - He is ready for marriage.

When a process required for the next action is completed, you can use the construction: "sich fertig machen" (to get ready for something)
Examples:
📍 Sie macht sich für die Prüfung fertig - She is getting ready for the exam.
📍 Der Zug ist fertig zur Abfahrt - The train is ready to depart.
📍 Wir sind fertig für die Abreise - We are ready to depart.

Present Participle - Partizip I 📘

Today we're exploring the "present participle" and how it's used:

From verbs, you can create "adjectives": tanzen (to dance) becomes tanzend (dancing), kaufen (to buy) becomes gekauft (bought). These verbal forms with adjective characteristics are called participles.

Examples:
📍ein tanzendes Mädchen – a dancing girl. This is the present participle (as she is dancing now).

In Partizip 1, you simply add -d to the infinitive. Briefly, the formula looks like this: verb + d + ending

Participles answer the questions: welcher? - which one, welche? - which, welches? - which.
📍fliegend - flying
📍singend - singing

‼️ Partizip I indicates an ongoing active action. That is, something is happening at this moment, and we don't yet know how it will end.
Examples:
📍das fahrende Auto - the driving car
📍der sprechende Junge - the talking boy

‼️ Participles are declined just like adjectives. For this, it's important to remember the gender, number, and case of the noun.
📍mit dem fahrenden Auto - with the driving car
📍ein auf dem Schrank liegendes Buch - a book lying on the cupboard

The article comes first, followed by information that complements the subject, with the participle at the end.

‼️ A participle can be replaced with a relative clause.
Instead of: Ein auf dem Schrank liegendes Buch - a book lying on the cupboard
Like this: Ein Buch, das auf dem Schrank liegt - a book that lies on the cupboard

‼️ Partizip I also has another function - forming adverbial participles. An adverbial participle answers the question "doing what?" In such cases, the participle can stand on its own (and actually characterize an action, relating to the verb):
Examples:
📍Sie geht weinend. - She walks, crying.
📍Das Mädchen tanzt lachend. - The girl dances, laughing.
📍Er kommt lächelnd auf sie zu. – He approaches her, smiling.
Though this form is quite rare in conversational speech and not very favored by Germans themselves. Instead, you might use a simpler construction.

NUR vs. ERST 📘

In German, the restriction "only" is primarily expressed by two words: erst (only) and nur (only). What's the difference?

1️⃣ The word ERST expresses two kinds of limitations:
📌 Temporal (only two days, just three hours, only two years)
Examples:
📎Meine Frau kommt erst am Freitag. – My wife will only arrive on Friday.
📎Ich lerne Deutsch erst zwei Tage. - I have only been learning German for two days.

📌 In terms of quantity of something or someone (no more than) over a certain period of time.
Examples:
📎Magst du das Buch? – Do you like the book?
📎Ich weiß noch nicht. Ich habe erst fünf Seiten dieses Buches gelesen. – I don’t know yet, I have only read five pages of this book so far.

‼️ERST, even if used not with temporal circumstances but with complements, still indicates a development over time.

2️⃣ The word NUR applies to everything else except time:
Examples:
📎Ich habe nur 5 Euro. – I have only 5 euros.
📎Das kannst nur du wissen! - Only you can know that.
📎Sie will nur schlafen – She just wants to sleep.

📌 If NUR refers to time, it particularly emphasizes that the action or situation will not change:
📎Mein Mann geht nur am Samstag zur Konferenz. - My husband is only going to the conference on Saturday (emphasizing that he will go only one day out of the seven days of the week).
📎Sie bleibt nur eine Stunde. – She will only stay for an hour (not two or three, this is decided).
📎Ich bin müde, deswegen habe ich nur fünf Seiten dieses Buches gelesen. – I am tired, so I have only read five pages of this book (and am not planning to read further).

‼️Here are some clear examples of the importance of understanding the differences between ERST and NUR:
Examples:
📎Ich bin in 20 Minuten zu Hause. Ich habe nur 100 Euro ausgegeben. - I'll be home in 20 minutes. I have only spent 100 euros.
📎Ich brauche noch 20 Minuten! Ich habe erst 100 Euro ausgegeben. - I need another 20 minutes! I have only spent 100 euros so far. (The situation continues to develop, and he will spend more over time).
📎Er kommt erst am Dienstag. - He will only arrive on Tuesday (meaning he will not be there until Tuesday).
📎Er kommt nur am Dienstag. - He will arrive only on Tuesday (emphasizing that he will not be there on Monday or Wednesday).
