ADUSO 👀

In German, there are conjunctions that do not affect the word order in a sentence. These are encapsulated in the acronym ADUSO:
A - aber (but)
D - denn (because)
U - und (and)
S - sondern (but, used for contrast when the first part contains "nicht")
O - oder (or)

After these conjunctions, the word order can be either direct (the subject comes after the conjunction, followed by the conjugated part of the verb, and then secondary sentence elements) or inverted (after the conjunction comes a secondary sentence element, followed by the conjugated part of the verb and the subject).

📌 Let's look at some examples:

- Aber heute gehe ich nicht zur Arbeit. - But today, I am not going to work.
• Es ist dunkel, aber wir machen kein Licht an. - It's dark, but we're not turning on the light.
• Er geht nicht spazieren, denn er hat viel zu tun. - He is not going for a walk because he has a lot to do.
• Es schneit und die Sonne scheint. - It's snowing and the sun is shining.
• Nicht er, sondern sie verbringt viel Zeit mit den Kindern. - Not he, but she spends a lot of time with the children.
• Kommst du mit ins Kino oder möchtest du zu Hause bleiben? - Are you coming to the cinema, or would you like to stay at home?

These conjunctions help in maintaining the clarity and coherence of sentences, making it easier for both speakers and learners to structure their sentences without having to worry about changing the word order.

😉 Degrees of Comparison for Adjectives

1️⃣ Positiv (the basic form in which the adjective appears in the dictionary)
It's also often used for comparison when it's necessary to show that the characteristic is equivalent in both cases.

- Der Hund ist so groß wie mein Sohn. (The dog is as big as my son)

2️⃣ Komparativ (the comparative form). It's formed using the suffix –er:

klein - kleiner (small - smaller)

If the root of the adjective or adverb contains the letters o, a, u, they receive an Umlaut.

groß - größer (big - bigger), kalt - kälter (cold - colder), jung - jünger (young - younger)

To express comparison and indicate non-equivalence of characteristics, als (than) is used.

- Mein Bruder ist jünger als deine Schwester. (My brother is younger than your sister)

3️⃣ Superlativ (the superlative form). It's formed using the suffix –ste/sten:

am kleinsten (the smallest), am größten (the biggest), am kältesten (the coldest)

❗️The Umlaut acquired in Komparativ is retained. If the root of the adjective or adverb ends in –t, an –e is added before the suffix.

This version of Superlativ is used when the adjective stands alone from the noun and does not agree with it.

- Der Baum ist am höchsten. (This tree is the tallest)

There is an attributive variant of the adjective in the Superlativ degree – when it agrees with the noun. Then, the ending of the adjective will depend on the gender, number, and case of the noun and follow the rules of adjective declension.

- Juli ist der heißeste Monat des Jahres. (July is the hottest month of the year)

✔️ Exceptions:
Viel – mehr – am meisten (a lot)
Gern – lieber – am liebsten (gladly)
Gut – besser – am besten (good)
Hoch – höher – am höchsten (high)
Nah – näher – am nächsten (close)
Bald – eher – am ehesten (soon)

Expressing Possession in German 🇩🇪

To express possession in German, you can use several methods depending on the context and the structure of the sentence. Here’s how:

1️⃣ Add -s to the name

🤔"Sie ist Carols Tochter." - She is Carol's daughter.

🤔"Das ist Karls Handy." - That is Karl's phone.

❗️If the name ends in -s, -z, etc., you can:
• Add an apostrophe:
🤔"Nicolas’ Haus"

- Use the preposition "von":
🤔"Das Haus von Nicolas" - Nicolas's house

2️⃣ Use the Genitive case

🤔"Da liegt die Tasche der Mutter." - There lies the mother's bag.

🤔"Wo ist das Heft des Schülers?" - Where is the student's notebook?

❗️Remember, masculine and neuter nouns receive the ending -(e)s

🤔"Das ist das Zimmer der Kinder." - This is the children's room.

3️⃣ Use "von" + Dative

🤔 "Hier steht das Auto von meinem Bruder." - Here stands my brother's car.

🤔"Das ist die Wohnung von meinen Freunden." - This is my friends' apartment.

Each method has its place depending on formality, clarity, and sometimes the aesthetic or sound of the sentence in spoken German.

🗒 PASSIVE - The Best Cheat Sheet!

📌The passive voice in German is used when the action or its result is important, not who performed the action. For example:

🔹Mein Vater hat dieses Haus gebaut. - My father built this house (emphasis on who exactly did it).
🔹Dieses Haus wurde vor zweihundert Jahren gebaut. - This house was built 200 years ago (the speaker is not interested in who built the house, the main thing is the fact of its construction).

📌How is the Passive formed?
By using the auxiliary verb werden (to become) and Partizip II of the main, semantic verb.

📌What to remember?
The principle of conjugating the verb werden in the present tense, as well as the three forms of this verb (werden - wurde - geworden).

📍Passive is used in almost all tenses:
▫️Präsens: Das Buch wird gelesen. - The book will be read (or becomes read). Present tense in passive voice is often used to indicate future time, while Futur in passive form is used less frequently.
▫️Präteritum: Das Buch wurde drei Tage lang gelesen. - The book was read for three days (or the book has been read in three days).
▫️Perfekt: Das Buch ist schon gelesen worden.

📍Pay attention to Perfekt in the passive voice. Here it's important to note that the verb werden in Perfekt is always used with sein. Also, when forming Passiv in Perfekt, the verb geworden loses its ge- because most verbs in Partizip II are formed with this prefix. The omission of ge- in the verb werden in this case helps not to overload an already complex construction 🧐
