Gaza’s agricultural sector is on the verge of collapse, according to Noha Al-Sharif from the Agricultural Development Association. She said that more than 95% of farmland has been damaged, leaving farmers without their livelihoods or the ability to produce crops. About 94% of farmers have lost their main source of income, and debt levels have reached 74%.
She also pointed out that in some seasons, the amount of farmland has dropped by 70 to 80 percent. There are shortages of seeds, fuel, and irrigation water, and many wells, greenhouses, and livestock have been destroyed. Food insecurity now affects 97% of people in Gaza, with 640,000 facing famine and 85% at emergency levels.
Al-Sharif said that agriculture in Gaza is being deliberately destroyed. She called for urgent international help to reopen border crossings, allow the import of farming supplies, and support rebuilding efforts to prevent more people from going hungry.
