From the fasting of the elect - صوم الخصوص - according to al-Ghazali رحمه الله is the guarding of the tongue.

From the rights of the tongue according to Zayn al-‘Abidin Ali bin al-Husayn bin Ali bin Abi Talib رضي الله عنهم is to leave superfluous talk which has no benefit and to be kind to people, speaking goodness among them.

Our goal in Shahr #Ramadan is to eliminate bad habits to replace them with excellent habits.
“Whoever leaves something for Allah’s sake, Allah will substitute it for something better.”

- Prophet Muhammad

“The doer of good is better than it, and the doer of evil is worse than it.”

- Imam Ali bin Abi Talib كرم الله وجهه
It is the faqir’s advice to avoid as much as possible argumentation on [anti]-social media about intra-Muslim theological and fiqhi matters during Shahr Ramadan. Unless one is a scholar or a seasoned student of knowledge, (s)he should not be engaged in these debates anyway as many of these are based in speculative evidence and false assumptions about others to begin with due to lack of rigorous studies. Rather folks are better off focusing on structured learning and self development instead of debating others. Many debates are nothing but the manifestation of ego anyway.

When it comes to geo-politics, avoid these too if you aren’t from the affected regions of certain fitan without having actual eyes and ears on the ground. Bias and political partisian media including government funded or controlled stations ran by Muslims are not sufficient sources to use to publicly opine nor debate others by the way.

May Allah تعالى increase us in beneficial knowledge and give us the wisdom to speak with that knowledge at the appropriate times and locations.
‘Ilm without adab can have a person with a lot of memorized information appear to be like an insensitive brute in the eyes of people.

الأدب قبل العلم
Imam al-Hasan bin Ali رضوان الله عليهما was born on the 15th of Shahr Ramadan.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم said about him, “This son of mine is a Sayyid; Allah will reconcile through him two big groups.”

Imam al-Hasan kept outward political khilafah for six months. He made the difficult yet noble decision to come to an agreement to avert another civil war by relinquishing governance which he had more right to. If only we operated our dealings today like Imam al-Hasan based upon what is best for the Muslims grounded in the facts on the ground instead of what we see as just or in our best personal interests, we would have more progress.

The 17th night of Ramadan is the Night of Badr which came before the day when 313 truthful Sahabah رضي الله عنهم along with Allah’s select Angels defeated approximately 1,000 disbelievers from Quraysh. It is narrated that Ali bin Abi Talib, Abdullah bin Mas’ud and Zayd bin Arqam رضي الله عنهم would begin looking for the Night of Power on the Night of Badr due to Jibril and Angels descending as mentioned in the ayah in Surah al-Qadr. It is reported that Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal relayed that the People of al-Madinah would also look for the Night of Power on the Night of Badr.

The more relied upon position is to look for the Night of Power in the last 10 nights, the odd nights in particular. The most held opinion is to look on the 27th nighth.

It is my suggestion to give life to much of the night looking for the Night of Power starting tonight until the night of ‘Eid al-Fitr.

🖋ابن المقفع
Ibn Abbas رضي الله عنهما narrated that:
the Prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم sent Mu’adh to Yemen, and said: “You are going to some people among the People of the Book. Call them to bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and that I am the messenger of Allah. If they obey that, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them five prayers every day and night. If they obey that, then tell them that Allah has enjoined upon them Zakah from their wealth, to be taken from the rich and given to their poor. If they obey that, then beware of (taking) the best of their wealth. And beware of the du’a of the oppressed, for there is no barrier between it and Allah.”

There are many lessons in this hadith. Besides one being the order of Islamic education for youth as well as da’wah to new Muslims, this is an example of what is known as the Fiqh of Priorities فقه الأوليات.

One must first learn properly before implementing, and one must strive to implement before teaching others.

Likewise a community must prioritize defending itself before it fancies itself being able to defend others. It is like when the flight attendant instructs before take off that if cabin pressure is lost, put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others in your care with their masks. As American Muslims, we need to calculate more this basic principle regarding our community funding priorities.

“And do not incline towards wrongdoers lest you shall touch the fire, for then you will not have any protectors other than Allah, nor will you receive help.” - Surah Hud, Ayah 113

A sign that we have spiritual problems with our hearts is that we incline towards those who openly do wrong or oppression and find more excuses for them than aligning with those who are being wronged or oppressed. Religious and political partisanship will take some to hell for this very immoral position which emanates from diseased hearts. We seek refuge with Allah تعالى from that.
