STEPPER is a real 8-bit processor that lives inside a smart contract on Robinhood Chain.
There is a token, and it pays for the clock. The machine under it runs before anyone owns any of it. That is the whole difference, and it is a difference of order and substance rather than category: 2,161 NAND gates, 167 flip-flops, 16 registers of eight bits, 256 bytes of RAM, and a 32-instruction set where all thirty-two are used, because the opcode field is five bits wide and thirty-two is what five bits addresses.
Every gate was placed by a program that composes them one at a time from a single primitive. There is no synthesiser and no borrowed netlist. An optimiser then folds constants, shares repeated logic and drops what nothing reads: 2,425 gates were placed, 2,161 shipped, and the eleven per cent that turned out to be doing no work could only be found by building it first.

Welcome to STEPPER.
Before anything else, here is the one thing worth knowing: the processor already exists. You can open steppercpu.tech right now, on the device you are holding, and watch 2,161 NAND gates switch one clock edge at a time. Nothing is coming soon. It is running.
What this actually is
STEPPER is a real 8-bit processor that lives inside a smart contract on Robinhood Chain.
The clock is the chain
A processor needs something to tell it when to advance. Ours does not have an oscillator. It has blocks.
One block, one clock edge. Somebody calls step(), the gates settle, every flip-flop latches at once, and the machine is one cycle further along. step() carries no owner check, no keeper and no schedule. Whoever pays the gas takes the step, and the event records them as that cycle's sponsor.
So a chip runs exactly as fast as somebody is willing to pay for, and stalls when nobody thinks the next cycle is worth it. That is not a limitation being worked around. It is a price signal on a machine whose clock belongs to nobody. It is also what the token is for.
Why put a processor on a chain at all
The honest answer first: not for speed. A chain does not replace silicon, it runs on silicon, N times over, every cycle this processor executes is executed again by every validator. On-chain compute is a datacenter multiplied by the size of the validator set. Anyone selling you a chain that replaces GPUs is selling a thermodynamics that does not exist.
Redundancy is the cost. What it buys is the one thing no amount of silicon produces on its own: a chip in a datacenter cannot prove what it did. This one can. Every cycle is public, deterministic, and re-executable by anyone from the gate table.
What it can do
It decides. Feed the input port a price instead of a byte and the same gates become a strategy: it reads the sample, keeps its state in registers and RAM, and puts an intent on the output port. Four of them run on the site right now, written in real assembly, on the real netlist, in your browser.
A CPU has never placed an order in its life, and this one does not either. It computes and drives a port; a device on the other side of that port does the work. Converter in, die, controller out. That is a bus, and it is how every processor that has ever controlled anything controlled it.
What you can do today, without spending anything
Write a program in the assembler. Run it, or single-step it, and watch each gate light on the cycle it switched. Design the chip that would carry it. All of that runs in your tab against the same netlist a contract walks, with no wallet, no account, and nothing behind the page: no API, no backend, no key. Pull your network cable out after it loads and it keeps stepping.
What is verified, and how you check it
1,052,672 vectors. Zero failures. Every ALU operation swept exhaustively against arithmetic, every operand, both carry states, then the whole processor run cycle-for-cycle against an independent model, then the compiled contracts put into a real EVM and run through it block by block.
The build refuses to ship unverified. npm run silicon composes the netlist, runs five checks, and writes nothing at all unless every one passes. A test suite you can skip is decoration.
Where this goes
One token carries through all of it. There is no v2 and no migration, because the contracts holding the silicon are pure and ownerless, new generations land beside the old rather than over it. ST-16 is already written, compiled and proved: the same description built at a wider word, 3,787 gates, zero contract rewrites.
One request
Do not take any of this on trust. Go and check it. That is the entire point of building it this way.
