More than half of the 100 million patients of a US-based hospital interacted with their physicians online last year. IT services major Cognizant's internet-of-things (IoT) solution made this happen using information from smartphones and other devices such as glucose meters.
Video games have become a proving ground for AIs and Uber has shown how its new type of reinforcement learning has succeeded where others have failed.

Some of mankind’s most complex games, like Go, have failed to challenge AIs from the likes of DeepMind. Reinforcement learning trains algorithms by running scenarios repeatedly with a ‘reward’ given for successes, often a score increase.

Two classic games from the 80s – Montezuma’s Revenge and Pitfall! – have thus far been immune to a traditional reinforcement learning approach. This is because they have little in the way of notable rewards until later in the games

Just Released: Facebook PyTorch 1.1

In brief: Facebook released PyTorch 1.1, a major upgrade to the already popular PyTorch. According to VentureBeat, the upgrade includes new APIs, support for Boolean tensors and custom recurrent neural networks, and an upgrade of the JIT compiler for optimizing computational graphs. Yet, the highlight is the JIT compiler improvement, which, in the words of PyTorch creator, Soumith Chintala, allows the user to be “more productive by a huge amount.” Since its launch in 2017, PyTorch went on to be one of the most sought-after open source deep learning frameworks, with over 31 million downloads from GitHub.

Why this is important: The JIT compiler improvements massively increase performance. “The problem people had was whenever they deviated from the norm, their code would be 10 times slower because the fast version would be massive and we didn’t have high-performance cuDNN kernels,” says Chintala.
Sisense announced today that it has acquired Periscope Data to create what it is calling a complete data science and analytics platform for customers. The companies did not disclose the purchase price.
