"Although cloaked as a history of intelligenceresearch, one gets the impression that Murdoch cameto this project with a deep-felt antagonism against thestudy of intelligence, especially the field's relationshipwith the study of eugenics. Consequently, he uses thistext as a platform for his anti-eugenicists opinions and,to a lesser degree, his agenda for abolishing IQ tests.However, when not ill-informed, Murdoch's ideas areneither original nor perspicacious, and his historiogra- phy is very undisciplined, which ultimately leaves thereader questioning the purpose of this treatise. Murdochwould have been better off entitling his book,
“Selected personal and historical anecdotes to show why I hateintelligence research, eugenics, and related ideas.”
It would be a much more accurate description of the work he produced, and would save the reader from any false expectations"
