We know the US is a tipping culture country. People are supposed to tip for everything - pay for shipping on a package, tip delivery; pay for a hotel room; tip housekeeping; pay listed rates on anything from taxi, to haircuts, to nail shops, tip the person; and especially tip your servers at restaurants.
Above trying to add income to low wage workers, I think part of this culture is that the consumers get a tiny buzz of superiority off 'hiring' their attendants

I've always thought % tipping is wrong. For the most part, if you go out for a 15$ meal or a 60$ meal, the time invested in serving you is the about the same, so why's the server at Che Uppercrust worth 4X the server at Local Mom&Pop?

Although I, fortunately, don't live in a tipping culture area, I can't shake my indoctrination to tipping. Even though at the patio bars I frequent, I have to get my beer out of a cooler and carry it to my table, I tip 15%, because I'm a regular and they leave me alone and even help keep the riff-raff and cigarette bums away. Taxis - unless they scare me, if it's 57 lei and I give 60, they can keep it. If it's 54, I want to see five headed my direction. In Chișinău, most of the hairdressers are used to guys wanting their money's worth - take it short, not my cup of tea. Have a wonderful lady, super nice to me, does things my way. She gets tipped 100 lei on a 150 lei cut.

At restaurants I tip ~10%, even though Lili moans. Thursday our check was 540 and I handed him 600. Our table was 3 paces from the place he put in the order and picked up dishes, so he might have invested 20 steps and 8 minutes on us. He brought my change (no demands or expectations, and certainly none of that 'do you need change') and I waved him off. So he got almost twice the hourly minimum wage for his efforts

I'm a believer in giving extra to people who need it. Lilia's flowers yesterday were 50. I tossed the lady an extra 20 because she was sweet and a little extra means something to her.
