The harsh reality of the UPSC journey is often hidden behind success stories.
One of my friends started preparing in 2019.
She gave her first attempt in 2020 but couldnโt clear prelims. In 2021, she finally cleared prelims and wrote mains, only to fall short.
Again in 2022, she reached the mains stage and again couldnโt make it to the list.
In 2023 and 2024, she couldnโt clear prelims.
In 2025, her seventh year of preparation, Last attempt, she cleared prelims again with hope in her eyes, but once more, mains slipped away from her hands.
Seven years of discipline, sacrifice, and relentless effort, yet no final result. Today, she is battling depression, anxiety, and the feeling that life is slipping away.
And this isnโt just her story, this is the silent truth of thousands of aspirants. UPSC is not just an exam; it is a test of mental strength, emotional endurance, and the ability to stand up after repeated failures. It demands everything, your time, relationships, health, and peace of mind. But life is bigger than any single exam. No result is worth losing yourself. UPSC can shape your future, but it should never be allowed to break your spirit. Every aspirant must understand that success does not lie only in clearing this exam; sometimes, success means having the courage to rebuild your life, rediscover your worth, and choose yourself over the pressure of a dream.
