After planting thousands of Conocarpus trees (locally Saptaparni) over the last few years, the civic bodies in Gujarat are now chopping them down after government orders sought a ban on planting the species because of its environmental and health hazards.

The tree was the go-to option for municipal agencies and industrial units of Gujarat engaging in afforestation activities to meet their environmental commitments, till the state government banned its plantation on September 26, 2023.

The order issued by the forest department highlighted the damages the plant causes to environmental and human health.

The move came following years of campaigning by experts who pointed out that the plant is a water-guzzler and can hit the water tables. Large populations of this tree has sped up the evaporation process and its roots choke the drainage pipes, they added.

The plant pollinates twice a year and is also injurious to human health, stated experts, citing a rise in cases of cough, cold, asthma and respiratory disorders.

▪️The India  Meteorological  Department (IMD) said  on  Tuesday  that  southern  peninsular  India  this  year experienced  the  sixth  driest  October  in  123 years.

▪️This region –  comprising  Kerala,  Mahe,  south  interior  Karnataka, Tamil Nadu,  Karaikal,  Puducherry, coastal Andhra Pradesh,  Yanam and  Rayalaseema – received only  74.9mm  of  rain in October, which  was over  60 per cent below normal.

▪️Southern  peninsular  India  during  October  sees  rainfall  from  both  the  retreating  southwest  monsoon  and the  incoming  northeast  monsoon.  But  this  year,  the  region  remained  dry  for  nearly  25days  in  October, IMD  officials   said.  Unlike  the  past  few  years,  the  southwest  monsoon  ended  nearly  on  time  after  a  134-day season this year.

🎯🌇Climate Change Could Lead to Significant Loss of 🦀🦐 Seafood Nutrients in Low-Income Countries.
▪️Low-income  countries  could  lose  up  to  30  per  cent of  nutrients  from  seafood due  to  climate  change, researchers  say  in  a  study  published  in  the  journal  Nature  Climate  Change.

▪️These   findings  about  the  loss  of  nutrients,  including  calcium,  iron,  protein  and  omega-3 fatty  acids,  were valid  in  a  high  emissions  and  low  mitigation  scenario,  the  researchers  from  the  University  of  British Columbia (UBC), Canada, said.

▪️The nutrient  loss  may  be  restricted  to  10 per cent,  however,  should  the  world  meet  the  Paris  Agreement targets  of  limiting  global  warming  to  1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius, they said.

▪️"Low-income  countries and  the  global  south,  where  seafood  is  central  to  diets  and  has  the  potential  to help  address  malnutrition,  are  the  hardest  hit  by  the  effects  of  climate change,"  said first  author William Cheung,  professor and director  of  the UBC Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF).
