I think the underlying picture here really is that I and my co-founder are both heavily affected by air pollution in Northern Thailand and are seeing how it affects the health of thousands of people.

We believe strongly that air quality monitoring should be affordable so that people from poorer regions and countries can afford air quality monitoring and thus protect their health by knowing when the air quality turns bad. This is one of the reasons why we open-sourced our air quality designs [1] and are working with many NGOs and Universities to bring accurate low-cost air quality monitoring to underserved communities around the world.

Since we are a self-funded company we do not have pressure to maximize profit but can work under the mantra "Impact first (and profit will follow if we do a good job)."

By the way, if you work in air quality research, we are currently running a global co-location test program and are interested in additional partners [2].

We should shift our perspective on our native-born citizens. Because they're such a massive economic drain we should _stop_ investing in them completely. I know it sounds radical but hear me out. We can realize higher economic utility for our society if A) we stop all investments in non-skilled, non-working-age citizens and B) export those people who are a burden on our society (children, the elderly, the sick, people who enjoy EDM, you get it).

In this way Canada can achieve higher economic utility for itself. I'm imagining a system where everyone in the society is brought in on a temporary basis. They are imported after their post-secondary education and exported maybe 10 years before their retirement. In this way we avoid all the costs associated with having "people" in our country and instead we reap the economic reward of their labor!

I guess I shouldn't say "our" country. I would be exported fairly quickly... But! To those glorious (and brave) few on the executive committee entrusted to leading Canada Inc. through these difficult times, the society they get to inhabit will undoubtedly be the economic envy of the world!

Preview images of what? Images usually should be routed through a CDN which caches them directly in the user's country. It's extremely cheap and easy to set up. Nothing compared to running an application in multiple datacenters.

I'm a woodworker and I've also owned a property management company and done my own home's remodeling (the kind of remodel that means you talk to structural engineers). What you say is true, in some ways and with asterisks. It is also irrelevant. New growth pine is preposterously strong when loaded in the correct dimensions and balloon- and platform-framed houses are designed to do exactly that.

Modern silviculture is an absolute marvel. It turns out prodigious amounts of more-than-good-enough material at remarkably cheap prices.

I've noticed that when people reduce some random thesis to a level of brevity beyond the minimum to actually express it coherently -- but do so succinctly and perhaps a bit archly -- the audience enjoys the illusion of effective communication, and fills in the intellectual voids on their own, affirmatively.

As if they've gotten a bargain, or been saved some time.

I mainly noticed this when so many people stopped writing awesome long-form blog posts, and supplanted it with tweeting. I seldom found value in the tweets, even from people whose blogs I prized. But many people did! And the tweeters were encouraged.

I see the same thing here. I mainly know the OP from his essays, which are overall quite good (IMHO). I subscribed to the RSS feed of them. I think I've read them all, even.

But it's hard to imagine a version of this tweet as a full essay (even a short one) that didn't end up repudiating the core idea entirely.

Because once you had to add even a bit more detail -- such as examples of it happening in the wild -- you'd end up realizing that people don't generally get mocked for changing their minds. That changing your mind is actually encouraged and praised by various books, corporate 'leadership principles', philosophers, etc... and in most cases, derision and animosity aimed at opinion-changers tends to be aimed at the ones who are obviously self-serving hypocrites, not those who've genuinely reconsidered things and come to a better conclusion.

So even though you still could, no dooubt, come up with some examples, through the process of writing the essay (or blog post), you'd... realize it was bullshit.

And then, you wouldn't publish the essay.

Re: The Awk Programming Language, Second Edition

I was privileged to be one of the technical reviewers for this book. There's a fair bit of the original content (which is still great), but Kernighan's done a great job with some good restructuring and some significant updates, too. The early chapters are very hands-on, with something of a focus on "exploratory data processing", particularly with CSV files. Big data with AWK, you could say.

Gawk and awk will soon have a new "--csv" option that enables proper CSV input mode (parsing files with quoted and multiline fields per the CSV RFC). I'm really glad Arnold Robbins added a robust "--csv" implementation to Gawk, too, because that's really the most-heavily used version of AWK nowadays. I've already got CSV support in my own GoAWK implementation, and I'll be adding "--csv" to make it compatible.

I'm really glad this new updated version is coming out!
