Re: Thoughts on Svelte(Kit), one year and 3B requests ...
I like the fact minimalist approaches, like svelte, htmx and alpine.js are getting more and more traction.
I felt like fighting this fight alone for years in the golden years of node, webpack and react where everybody was creating crazy stacks and adding GraphQL and so on, to basically get what Django + jquery did 10 years ago in a tenth of the time and code.
So far I also survived:
- xml is the future
- let's use nosql for all the things
- you must use the same language at the back and front
- yes, you site must have an AMP version (ah, you forgot this one, didn't you? It was sooo imporant, and then pouf, it was gone like tear in the rain)
- yes, your home page must be an SPA
- you can't code anything without async
- you can't live without a message queue
- everything must become a micro service
- of course you need a container for that
- of course you need a orchestrator to organize those containers
- of course you need the cloud, it would be crazy to deal with those containers and orchestrators yourself
- dude, why do you have a server? Use a serveless backend!
- dude, why do you have a backend? Just call saas from the edge!
Every year, some generation of engineers have to learn the concepts of "there is no silver bullet", "use the right tech for the right problem", "your are not google", "rewriting a codebase every 2 years is not a good business decision", "things cost money".

Re: Discord is opening the monetization floodgates wit...
I say this as a (begrudging) discord user : I don't know what they (Discord) did right to get communities to lock up all of their community and data into such a hard-to-index walled garden.
People compared the loss of what.cd to the burning of the Library of Alexandria. While I do think that was an exaggeration at the time, I worry about the loss of effort and 'thought-power' when the discord walls get even taller than they are now -- or worse yet -- when the gardens disappear without ever having had the chance to have been archived somewhere.

Their app isn't buggy, is easy to use, voice chat and screen sharing just work, and it's extremely easy to onboard yourself -- you don't even need to create an account immediately.
Love it or hate it, let's not pretend it's like IRC, Slack or any of its competitors.

Re: Ask HN: What is the morale like inside Reddit, as ...
Reddit was a co-op between a few groups of people.
General low effort content scrollers
Power users and mods who appreciate creating and contributing to make a community
Advertising interests
The deal was, the ad seeking was for the mainstream strollers, and the contributing power users and mods could opt out of the bs. The community builders get a nice environment for their community, the scrollers get content, and the ad people get to shiw thejir ads.
I always thought spez understood this. Its why the api existed. Its why old.reddit.com existed. It was the commercial machine's compromise to the content generators in exchange for the moderating and commenting.
But he seems to have forgot. I wonder why?
Without the compromise the whole thing falls apart. Reddit becomes digg.

Re: A regular expression to check for prime numbers (2...
Technically not a regular expression, as (intuitively) the backreference has to “count” the number of 1’s that were matched. Regular expressions are equivalent to finite state machines, which cannot count arbitrarily high (any state machine that can count arbitrarily high needs an infinite number of states, since there are infinite natural numbers).
The 2022 discussion has a more formal proof using the pumping lemma.

Yesterday the French government dissolved an environmental movement (which I don't like btw), amongst the reasons stated[0] are that they leave their phones at home or switch them off, refuse to talk to the police when arrested, or even that they organize their protest over the internet.
When accused of authoritarian tendencies the government usually answers "go to China or North Korea to see what a dictatorship is like".

The Wall Street Journal.
