💡Я тут случайно в бортовом журнале S7 прочла, что при восстановлении Собора Парижской Богоматери учёные нашли полуметровые железные скобы в каменной кладке. Исследователи с помощью радиоуглеродного датирования установили, что эти скобы были частью первоначальной конструкции памятника (до этого считалось, что ими просто укрепили здание в 18 и 19 веках). По данным археологических раскопок, строители применяли сварные скобы из нескольких кусков железа на самом раннем этапе возведения собора — в начале 1160-х годов. Из этого следует, что Нотр-Дам — первый известный готический собор, где железо массово использовалось для скрепления камней. В других зданиях того времени и, в частности, готических соборах применялись только деревянные тяги между арками. Вот такой интересный факт.

The key claim in the paper (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2204.12310.pdf) is that there are detectable changes in cosmic ray activity around 15 days before major seismic events. One posited mechanism is that stuff happens deep in the earth that affects the magnetic field first, and then kicks off some big earthquake. But they don't rule out loopier ideas (like sunspot activity driving changes in the Earth's dynamo that then kick off earthquakes).
One thing that troubles me in the paper is that the researchers appear to have gone looking for precursor patterns in an ad hoc way, with no physical theory in mind, just trying different binning techniques and delays until they got a signal. I'd love to hear the opinion of someone who knows this field on the soundness of this research.

I was a CS teacher for 8 years and the way I was able to hook like 85% of classes was I was introducing them to Hackits [1]. They all loved it because they use the web so much and this gave them the feeling of being able to look inside the matrix
This was also how I got into CS many years ago. The old tricks still work

This is a massive change from my first software industry job in 1997.
I was essentially a “design intern who knows HTML” on a team that built a shrinkwrap Windows application for enterprises. The core of the design team was a graphic designer, a cognitive scientist, an industrial designer, and a product manager with industry experience in the customer domain.
The application was Windows native. User research was conducted on site with scientific rigor. Adhering to platform guidelines and conventions was a priority. I think I spent a few weeks redrawing hundreds of toolbar icons so they’d be in line with the Office 97 look (the kind of boring job you give to the junior). If the app stood out on the Windows desktop, that would have been considered problematic.
Today a similar design team would only have a graphic designer and a PM, and neither of them would care the slightest about platform guidelines or customer domain. The UI is primarily an extension of the corporate brand. Hiring a cognitive scientist? Forget about it…
Everything certainly wasn’t perfect in the Windows/Mac desktop golden era. But the rise of the web wiped out a lot of good industry practices too.

When it comes to discussing intellectual property laws, it's important to remember where they came from.
I live in High Wycombe, a market town in the South East of England. In the nineteenth century, Wycombe was known as the centre of chair manufacturing. The chairs were initially transported by barge down the Wye and Thames Rivers to Windsor, where they were sold, and consequently became known as Windsor chairs. They were exported across the British Empire and to America, and were very popular.
The chair trade in Wycombe started in a particularly cold winter, when it was too cold for the farmhands to work outdoors. The farmhands were taught how to make the round parts of the chairs by the town wheelwright (who otherwise made wheels for the carts made by the town cartwright). In recognition of this, a wheel design was cut into the backs of the chairs as a decorative device. This design became the distinguishing mark of a chair made in Wycombe.
A chair factory opened in Birmingham, but found that their chairs didn't sell as well... until they started adding the wheel design into their chairs. Business was good for the Birmingham factory, until some of the Wycombe lads paid them a visit. Strong words were had, but the Birmingham factory continued making chairs with wheel designs for a few weeks, until the factory mysteriously burned down in the middle of the night.
The wheel design functioned as an early trademark: it clearly and unambiguously attested the provenance of the item. Trademarks are a consumer protection mechanism: it is the buyer who needs to know the provenance of the item in the absence of a trustworthy seller.
To the man on the Clapham omnibus[0], the presence or absence of the wheel design was the only attestation to the chair's origin: this trademark was a necessary innovation. However, if the gentleman from Clapham is unable to distinguish between an apple grown in Switzerland and a piece of computing machinery manufactured in China according to a design from California, one wonders whether a trademark would be of any help to him.

Было бы странно, если бы в винном мире все имело такие красивые витиеватые французские названия (вспомните терруар - почвенные характеристики вина и дегоржаж - переворачивать бутылку), а наука о сортах винограда имела посконное название "виноградоведения". Ну конечно это не так - сорта винограда и их особенности изучает ампелография. Ампел - ассоциируется как минимум с ампером, как максимум с вымпелом. На деле Ампелос - это, судя по всему, позднеримская любовь бога Диониса. Это известно из многих источников. А вот дальше история очень мутная.
По ряду источников Дионис был большой выдумщик и хотел подарить Ампелу виноградную гроздь(фантазию от бога виноделия ожидать трудно). Но ему показалось веселым подвесить ее на высокий вяз и сказать смертному Ампелу: «Залезь-ка на дерево, там для тебя подарочек!» Очень, дескать, остроумно: на вязе — виноград, шутка года! Ампел пока лез - оступился и разбился насмерть. Еще и мерзких этих шебуршащих вязовых фигней за шиворот насыпалось ему поди. Романтика! Но вот например у Нонна из Египта, который был в общем-то фанатом Диониса и написал все про его деяния, упоминается что Ампелос сам упал с быка, а Дионис был не виноват. Всей правды мы теперь не узнаем, но зато по такому триллеру легко запомнить название науки о сортах винограда. Не благодарите.
P.S После того, как я увидела фреску с Дионисом в Помпеях мне видится еще одна интерпретация мифа - судя по внешнему виду Диониса, он сам был виноградной лозой на вязе и ножками болтал. Какая сцена!

Попалась статья конца декабря 2021 г. (это важно, коннотации с нынешними временами не замышлялось) о расстреле миссии российского Красного Креста в Варшаве в январе 1919-го.:
Направляемая в Варшаву миссия Красного креста должна была, в числе прочего, способствовать установлению и налаживанию двусторонних отношений – в чем Россия была крайне заинтересована. Надо учесть, что российские миссии Красного креста уже успешно работали в Германии и Чехии, и это ни у кого не вызывало вопросов. […]
20 декабря 1918 года миссия прибыла в Варшаву. 22 декабря после встреч с рядом официальных польских лиц миссию принял начальник социального обеспечения Министерства труда Турович. Он поддержал проект. […]
Переговоры начались - но в этот же день в гостинице, где была размещена миссия, произошел обыск, и члены миссии были арестованы и заключены в тюрьму.
На следующий день, 30 декабря, арестованных членов миссии вывозят из Варшавы – на восток. В окрестностях деревни Мень Высоко-Мазовецкого повета 2 января 1919 года они были расстреляны. Убийство было совершено без каких-либо оснований в виде «приговора» или «приказа» (вернее, существовал ли письменный приказ и от кого он исходил – до сих пор неизвестно). […] Производившие расстрел жандармы пытались инсценировать ограбление - таким образом совершенное преступление планировалось скрыть. На все запросы о судьбе членов миссии предполагалось давать ответ, что они «пропали» в пути после высылки. А через какое-то время объявить, что они погибли в результате бандитского налета.
Что хочется сказать. За сто с лишним лет нравы восточноевропейских эльфов все-таки смягчились. Поливают дипломатов краской, отбирают имущество – но не расстреливают. I believe so. I was the loneliest after I got married when my now "ex" was really demanding and paranoid. People are most lonely when get excluded from their peers from school or work or social any groups. Old people are lonely because their friends and families are keep dying off or unable to social any longer. That's the reason I recommend joining some good social or religious organizations and make friends across all walks of life and ages, keep an open mind and enjoy life. Do not engage with toxic people, only keep good companies. Don't engage with people who don't want to engage, or thinking you can help them. People need to walk out of their own rut to be truly happy.

Эстремадура звучит провокационно для русского слуха. И ни о чем ему, этому слуху, не говорит. Подите, найдите с первого раза на карте - черт знает где ведь. Но есть кое-что, что роднит любого из нас с этим богом забытым местом - и это не выжженные равнины Ла-Манчи на востоке, не хамон, родившийся здесь (который мясо, а не сословие). Это вишни Валье-дель-Херте. И вишневые пироги. Их здесь любят так же как и у нас, а может чуточку больше.
У нас вишни - явление сезонное, такой яркий и скоротечный признак лета, когда ты босой и простоволосый вбегаешь по скрипящим половицам на веранду, а там пахнет. И всюду пахнет. И кто-то очень знакомый усмехаясь заглядывает с тобой в духовку, смешно всплескивает руками - "Опять ягода потекла". И потом ты, едва испеклось, ешь прямо так, горячее, с ягодными липкими прижарками. С рук - капает на ситец, расплывается синими пятнами. Или, если не пироги - у меня была соседка, которой я носила в дурацком оранжевом бидоне в горошек еще теплые от солнца вишни. А она - отдавала вишни назад белоснежными варениками, заплетенными косичкой.
Сегодня в Магните у моего дома была распродажа вишен, ящики с черешней были почти пустыми - а вот вишни по скидке все почему-то игнорировали. Я накупила много, очень уж вишня хороша - точно в такой степени спелости, когда и не кисло, и не приторно - и косточку вынимать в самый раз. Родился этот пирог, а его связь с Эстремадурой я подчеркну бокалом простого темпранильо - его в этом регионе тоже выращивают, и на самом деле я в жизни не пробовала ничего лучше с вишневой выпечкой. В его элегантном вкусе преобладают ягодные тона, обрамленные очень тонким шлейфом из специй и пряностей. Я всегда кладу в вишневые пироги немного муската и корицы, и это дает вину раскрыться ярче в послевкусии. Сочетание, рожденное для тысячи внуков:) Надеюсь, что когда-нибудь весной эти внуки отвезут бабулю полюбоваться цветением миллионов вишен в долине Херте. Ну или я сама себя отвезу, чего уж там. Новые рецепты позаписывать

Кроме того, Брюссель планирует разрешить Венгрии импортировать ряд товаров, которые попадут под новые санкции, поскольку такой импорт необходим для работы метро. В частности, защитные стекла, сигнальные устройства и сами вагоны.
На третьей линии метро Будапешта, пишет «Интерфакс», курсируют вагоны производства «Метровагонмаша», который также их ремонтирует и проводит техобслуживание.

I felt like fighting this fight alone for years in the golden years of node, webpack and react where everybody was creating crazy stacks and adding GraphQL and so on, to basically get what Django + jquery did 10 years ago in a tenth of the time and code.
So far I also survived:
- xml is the future
- let's use nosql for all the things
- you must use the same language at the back and front
- yes, you site must have an AMP version (ah, you forgot this one, didn't you? It was sooo imporant, and then pouf, it was gone like tear in the rain)
- yes, your home page must be an SPA
- you can't code anything without async
- you can't live without a message queue
- everything must become a micro service
- of course you need a container for that
- of course you need a orchestrator to organize those containers
- of course you need the cloud, it would be crazy to deal with those containers and orchestrators yourself
- dude, why do you have a server? Use a serveless backend!
- dude, why do you have a backend? Just call saas from the edge!
Every year, some generation of engineers have to learn the concepts of "there is no silver bullet", "use the right tech for the right problem", "your are not google", "rewriting a codebase every 2 years is not a good business decision", "things cost money".

I say this as a (begrudging) discord user : I don't know what they (Discord) did right to get communities to lock up all of their community and data into such a hard-to-index walled garden.
People compared the loss of what.cd to the burning of the Library of Alexandria. While I do think that was an exaggeration at the time, I worry about the loss of effort and 'thought-power' when the discord walls get even taller than they are now -- or worse yet -- when the gardens disappear without ever having had the chance to have been archived somewhere.

Their app isn't buggy, is easy to use, voice chat and screen sharing just work, and it's extremely easy to onboard yourself -- you don't even need to create an account immediately.
Love it or hate it, let's not pretend it's like IRC, Slack or any of its competitors.
