Немецкие инвестиции составляли лишь 7% от инвестиций стран Антанты.

О зависимости финансовой сферы от одной только Франции говорит такая статистика:
«К 1914 г. французские инвесторы сосредоточили в своих руках 2/3 российских облигаций, размещённых за рубежом, и почти треть российских облигаций внутри страны. На французских инвесторов также приходилась 1/3 иностранных пакетов акций российских компаний. Французский бизнес владел акциями 7 из 12 крупнейших российских банков с капиталом не менее 2 млн фунтов стерлингов. В трёх таких банках французскому капиталу принадлежал контрольный пакет акций».

Why Adam Neumann still gets money for a startup that cannot even fully define what he is trying to build after running we work to the ground is exactly why most people in this country are angry at the current state of things.

Normal people have consequences for the smallest of the mistakes they make in their lives. You can go to jail for failing to pay a parking ticket and have your life ruined if a medical bill goes to collections because your insurance wrongfully denied your claim.

Meanwhile corporations and connected individuals see little to no consequences of their direct actions. Ceos and founders mess up, and workers face the consequences. Real estate companies can literally walk away from their obligations and surrender buildings to lenders, and can still operate with no consequences. Banks can shut down and the executives can keep their millions in bonuses, while you who put your money in, should’ve known better about FDIC insurance limits.

🇺🇸 Soldiers Are Away from Home Now More than Ever Despite No Major Ongoing Wars

⬛️ "We're as high or higher with the [operations tempo]," Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Grinston told Military.com, referring to the frequency with which soldiers are away from home compared to the peak of the Global War on Terrorism.

⬛️ This month, the Army has some 120,000 soldiers deployed abroad, according to internal service data reviewed by Military.com.

⬛️ For comparison, the entire Department of Defense, encompassing all military branches, had an all-time high of 187,900 troops in Afghanistan and Iraq when those conflicts peaked in 2008, according to congressional data. But that number was short-lived and dipped fast after the conflict in Iraq died down and again after the passing of the surge in Afghanistan.

⬛️ The 2008 data also refers to a time when the Army was roughly 70,000 soldiers larger. Right now, a smaller Army is taking on a mission load loosely equivalent to the entire military in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

⬛️ There is a small contingent of soldiers in Syria and Iraq, mostly the Ohio National Guard's 37th Infantry Brigade Combat Team. The New Jersey National Guard's 44th Infantry Brigade Combat Team is in the midst of training to take over Ohio's mission. Additional troops are in reserve and providing logistical support in Kuwait. There are even some 300 Indiana National Guard soldiers in Kosovo, a peacekeeping mission that predates 9/11.

Re: Imaginary problems are the root of bad software

If anything it's the incentive system in software industry, which is at fault.

1. No designer is given promotion for sticking to conventional designs. It's their creative & clever designs that get them attention and career incentives.

2. No engineer is paid extra for keeping the codebase without growing too much. It's re-writes and the effort he puts in to churn out more solutions (than there are problems) that offers him a chance to climb the ladder.

3. No product manager can put "Made the product more stable and usable" in their resume. It's all the new extra features that they thought out, which will earn them reputation.

4. No manager is rewarded for how lean a team they manage and how they get things done with a tiny & flat team. Managers pride themselves with how many people work under them and how tall in the hierarchy they are.

Our industry thrives on producing more solutions than needed. Efforts are rewarded based on conventional measurements, without thinking through- in what directions were the efforts pointed at.

Unless the incentives of everyone involved are aligned with what's actually needed, we'll continue solving imaginary problems, I guess.

Коллега Захватов выражает негодование фактом лишения Ильи Новикова статуса адвоката.
Илью я знаю, отношусь к нему с симпатией как к профессионалу.
Политические взгляды Ильи считаю его личным делом, во многом не могу с ними согласиться но - это его жизнь.
При этом очень хорошо понимаю, что все связи Ильи с Россией оборваны, возвращаться в Россию Илья не собирается никогда, статус адвоката в России ему - по его собственным словам - совершенно не нужен.
Илья практикует на Украине, имеет статус там, имеет, насколько мне известно - гражданство Украины - и остается пожелать ему удач на новом месте.
Выступление Ильи на Совете носило ярко выраженный политический характер, он это не скрывал и не скрывает.
Если человеку не нужен статус адвоката в России, он заявляет об этом открыто и неоднократно - к чему эти возмущения?
Насильно мил не будешь.
Свое мнение по поводу «релокации» я выражал тоже открыто и внятно - врач нужен пациенту рядом а не на удаленке.
У каждого своя судьба. Свой выбор. Своя жизнь.
Но в голову лезет Довлатов: после коммунистов я больше всего не люблю антикоммунистов.
В бытность Сергея Донатовича главным редактором «Нового американца» он писал дивные колонки. Одну из них - о неистребимом желании эмигрантов учить жизни как оставшихся так и власти страны пребывания - в последнее время вспоминаю чаще и чаще.

💡Я тут случайно в бортовом журнале S7 прочла, что при восстановлении Собора Парижской Богоматери учёные нашли полуметровые железные скобы в каменной кладке. Исследователи с помощью радиоуглеродного датирования установили, что эти скобы были частью первоначальной конструкции памятника (до этого считалось, что ими просто укрепили здание в 18 и 19 веках). По данным археологических раскопок, строители применяли сварные скобы из нескольких кусков железа на самом раннем этапе возведения собора — в начале 1160-х годов. Из этого следует, что Нотр-Дам — первый известный готический собор, где железо массово использовалось для скрепления камней. В других зданиях того времени и, в частности, готических соборах применялись только деревянные тяги между арками. Вот такой интересный факт.

The key claim in the paper (https://arxiv.org/pdf/2204.12310.pdf) is that there are detectable changes in cosmic ray activity around 15 days before major seismic events. One posited mechanism is that stuff happens deep in the earth that affects the magnetic field first, and then kicks off some big earthquake. But they don't rule out loopier ideas (like sunspot activity driving changes in the Earth's dynamo that then kick off earthquakes).

One thing that troubles me in the paper is that the researchers appear to have gone looking for precursor patterns in an ad hoc way, with no physical theory in mind, just trying different binning techniques and delays until they got a signal. I'd love to hear the opinion of someone who knows this field on the soundness of this research.

I was a CS teacher for 8 years and the way I was able to hook like 85% of classes was I was introducing them to Hackits [1]. They all loved it because they use the web so much and this gave them the feeling of being able to look inside the matrix

This was also how I got into CS many years ago. The old tricks still work
