Дальше происходили крайне интересные события, о которых не грех напомнить. В 1525 г. великий магистр Тевтонского ордена Альбрехт Гогенцоллерн перешел в протестантизм и объявил себя светским правителем нового государства – герцогства Пруссия, которое оставалось в вассальной зависимости от Польши. Сын Альбрехта был слаб головой и польский король Стефан Баторий назначил регентом Пруссии его двоюродного брата, курфюрста Бранденбурга. Таким образом Польша положила начало союзу двух немецких государств, из которого впоследствии выросло могучее королевство Пруссия, сыгравшее ключевую роль в разделе Речи Посполитой.
Но вернемся к Поморью и Вармии. Они, населенные немцами и онемеченными поляками, оставались в составе Польши вплоть до первого раздела в 1772 г. Достались они, натурально, Пруссии 1️⃣. Кроме Гданьска, который оставался польским анклавом до второго раздела в 1793 г.
Версальский договор почти восстановил границу Польши по состоянию на 1772 год, снова за исключением Гданьска, который стал вольным городом, наотрез отказавшись быть частью Польши. Так появилось понятие «польского коридора», изображенного на этой немецкой открытке 1930-х годов. 2️⃣ (А о поляках, которые в XX веке отказывались быть частью Польши, мы еще поговорим).
В сухом остатке: если большая часть побережья стала польской по историческим меркам недавно, то в районе к западу от Гданьска польское присутствие более ощутимое: с 1466 по 1772 год он входил в состав страны. Нюанс в том, что живут здесь не поляки, а кашубы 3️⃣. Несмотря на то, что кашубский язык с 2005 г. получил в Польше статус регионального, кашубы не считаются официально признанным национальным меньшинством. В отличие, кстати, от русских, правда, исторически речь шла о потомках русских, живших в Польше в межвоенный период (в 2002 г. таковых было 6000 человек). Сегодня людей русской национальности в Польше около 13000, и, подозреваю, между теми русскими и новыми, приехавшими, начиная с 1990-х, различий больше, чем сходств.

Пока президент Чехии объясняет, как японское население находилось под "режимом наблюдения", и как это разумно по отношению к россиянам, напомню, как это наблюдение выглядело в Штатах:
а) американских японцев в ходе второй мировой собрали в натуральные концентрационные лагеря барачного типа
б) сажали туда и тех, кто обладал паспортом США, но по происхождению был японцем. Вид на жительство и паспорт — не помогали избежать интернирования
в) отпустили по домам всех — в 1948-м году
Я уже пятилетку знакомым объясняю, что такое интернирование, но они продолжают считать, что Европа и Штаты это рай земной, а раз у них вид на жительство есть — то они в домике.
Ага, в домике.
Только не на 100% — вы же русские в анамнезе. Иметь вероятность посадки в тюрьму по национальному признаку на 3-5 лет, пусть даже несколько процентов — непонятно зачем.

I have a related story:
Around the year 2000 I was working operations in the NOC for WebTV (then owned by Microsoft). For those who don't know, WebTV was a little set-top box with a modem which would dial up on demand and provide a very basic web/chat/email experience on the TV. The box would call a 1800 number to figure out its own phone number, then re-dial on a local toll-free number with a local sub-contracted ISP.
One of the services we had would periodically send a UDP datagram out to online clients to let them know they had new email. The settop box would then light up a little indicator light.
Of course, sometimes the client would hang up. The IP might get allocated to a PC dialup user. And sometimes, that PC dialup user might be running a firewall that was popular back then, called BLACK ICE DEFENDER.
BLACK ICE DEFENDER had all these (not so) cool features, the kind that semi-technical people love. For example, it would log ATTACKS. What are ATTACKS? Unrecognized traffic, of course.
Sometimes the little UDP datagram for our "you have mail" service would be delivered to a PC user running BLACK ICE DEFENDER, which would register it as an ATTACK. It would then ever so helpfully look up the ARIN contact information to see who sent the errant datagram -- which had the NOC phone number. It would then tell the user "THIS ENTITY IS HACKING YOU" and imply that contacting them would be productive. Yes, you could pick up a phone and call the Microsoft NOC. Back then, the internet was a smaller place.
My job was to check the NOC voicemail, which was reliably filled with very angry people. Often they would threaten that they've reported us to the FBI or somesuch, or that it confirmed some conspiracy theory or another. We played the good ones on speakerphone for entertainment.
Good times. Doesn't happen anymore.

When Chelsea Manning was arrested, Daniel Ellsberg would remind everyone that the stuff he leaked had a higher classification than whatever Manning leaked.
The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers is a great documentary about him.
Fun fact: Mike Gravel was an Alaskan senator. When he heard Daniel had the papers, he convinced Daniel to send them to him. Then Gravel went on a filibuster to prevent funding of the Vietnam war, and he chose to read the Pentagon papers aloud in the filibuster. By doing so, he ensured that they would legally be accessible to the public, because they were now part of the congressional record.

You ask “Where is the productive output of all these arbitrage shell games?”, which is a very fair question. The purpose of financial markets, sometimes but not always wholly achieved, is to transfer risks to those best able to hold them. E.g., you are not the optimal person to hold the risk that, through no fault of your own, your house burns down. That risk exists, and you are not the optimal holder of it. Hence insurance. A Lincolnshire farmer — and yes, I like the non-abstract solidly of the example — is not the optimal holder of the ‘risk’ that the Australian and Kansas wheat harvests are super-bountiful. Markets allow that risk to be transferred to a non-farmer better able to hold the risk.
Of course, with markets come some ‘unproductive’ stuff. Likewise, democracy is good, but that is not necessarily praising the optimality of all parts of campaign finance legislation.
Let me also mention that I am the author of the definitive reference book on old Vintage Port: Port Vintages (and seemingly the board disallows a link).
