Предложение РДК встретиться губернатору Гладкову в церкви и без оружия – отсылка к знаменитой встречи шотландского короля Роберта Брюса с графом Джоном Комином.
В 1306 году, время Второго шотландского междуцарствия, в ходе которого бароны сражались против Роберта Брюса, Брюс предложил Комину встретиться в церкви Грейфрайарс в г. Дамфрисе безоружными, чтобы там перед святым распятием не лгать друг другу и не пытаться друг друга убить. И, конечно, убил Комина, а еще и его дядю, также пришедшего на эту встречу.

I came to America poor, and went straight to a public university, on scholarship and no money to even pay for food (grad seminars and special events with free sandwiches and pizza is how I learned about things like quaternions as an undergrad). But as an eastern European hacker, i had a complete disregard of copyright, I also grew up in the 90s when hacker ethos included strong anti-authoritarian elements. No way I was going to pay those ridiculous book prices.
So first thing I did was setup a DC server (direct connect, early 2000s p2p sharing protocol) with a friendly grad student on university infrastructure, where we shared books, encouraged other students to upload books, we also built a dyi book scanner (there's one popular design that comes up first on google). the bookscanner at some point had a near 24/7 utilization, and people were coordinating time slots by dc messages. the room with the scanner (which is also where the DC server was) turned into a kind of unix room/hackerspace, because there was always somebody there working on something only vaguely related to university courses as such.
reminiscing on things like that always makes me realize just how much hacker culture has changed, to a significant extent as a result of societal pressure. I was extremely lucky, because when the handful of us got inevitably discovered, what followed was a series of meetings with department dean and university heads, lots of stern talking, which basically ended after they were convinced that they put sufficient fear of god in us. I'm particularly grateful to one networking and os professor who showed up to every single one of those meetings to advocate on our behalf. said professor had a significant contribution to computing in general, was strong supporter of old school hacker ethos, and is just all around great guy.
only a few years later aaronsw was thrown to the wolves by the cowards and bureaucrats (but I repeat myself) at MIT over his JSTOR downloads, which in my personal perception of history was the end of this kind of "oh captain my captain" university hacker culture.

The satire in the title is reminiscent of how Firebase was born.
We were previously working on a chat system called Envolve (https://www.envolve.com), that was 'Facebook Chat for any website'. A game that was using us for in-game chat created channels, used display: none on them, and passed game state through the chat.
We scratched our head, asked them why, and learned they wanted to focus on the frontend, not to deal with realtime message passing.
This led us to create a 'headless version' of our chat infra (re-written in Scala) that became the Firebase Realtime Database.

It’s so much worse than you think.
Many textbooks come with license keys specifically so you can’t buy used books anymore.
Students who do buy a used book are typically coerced into buying the license key to do digital homework, or whatever other reason.
When I was teaching during a graduate fellowship I accepted paper assignments for students who bought used books, or who shared books with other students. The Pearson representative complained and I was given a talking to by the graduate student dean about consistency or some such nonsense. Eventually I would be reassigned to teach classes that didn’t involve digital components.
We called it the textbook industrial complex.

Во-первых, азербайджанское лобби в Сомольном, судя по всему, расставило своих людей вообще везде, в том числе на вычитке текстов.
И стало значительно лучше.
Только вдумайтесь сколько слоев смысла в формулировке «Совет по улучшению качества жизни при губернаторе Санкт-Петербурга».
Тут и простота целеполагания:
- Что делать будем?
- Может, просто улучшим жизнь?
- Работаем!
Одновременно резко очерчены границы улучшения качества жизни - при губернаторе. Тут временные границы, и социальные, и даже некая загадка оставлена.
Во-вторых, из документа, очевидно, пропал четвертый пункт.
Предписано:
1. Создать совет.
2. Утвердить положение.
3. Возложить контроль.
А вот улучшить качество не жизни не предписано.

This seems like a great idea. If all the kids are offline, there is much less peer pressure to be online.
This solves the problem of kids being ostracized because their parents limited their screen time or didn't buy them a phone until they were too old.

Западная границы Польши проходит по рекам Одер и Нейсе. С одним примечательным исключением в районе г. Щецина (см фрагмент карты Западно-Поморского воеводства). 1️⃣
Сталинский план провести границу по Одеру-Нейсе не всем союзникам был по душе. Одним из противников этой идеи оказался Черчилль. К лету 1945 Польша была освобождена Красной армией, и законной властью в стране всеми союзниками было признано Временное правительство национального единства, а польское правительство в изгнании, всю войну сидевшее в Лондоне, уже не значило ничего. У Англии не было рычагов влияния на создававшуюся новую Польшу, и Черчиллю оставалось только брюзжать: мол, Польша получает на западе гораздо больше, чем потеряла на востоке – и четверть пахотных земель Германии, и промышленный потенциал. Впрочем, и сам Черчилль, переставший быть премьер-министром, значил уже несколько меньше.
В идее границы по Одеру-Нейсе была одна недосказаность. Дело в том, что город Штеттин, недалеко от устья Одера, лежит на обоих берегах реки, но преимущественно на левом, «немецком». Карта 2️⃣ показывает границы города на 1939 год. О том, что Штеттин будет польским, Сталин заявил в Потсдаме, а несколько спустя была проведена окончательная делимитация границы 3️⃣. Вместе со Штеттином Польша получила порт Свинемюнде.
Второй любопытный отрезок этой границы – на самом юге, так называемый Турошувский выступ (worek Turoszowski – буквально «мешок») между чешской границей и Нысой Лужицкой 4️⃣. Значительную часть выступа занимает огромный буроугольный разрез, поставляющий топливо для Туровской ТЭС. Она обеспечивает 5-6% генерации электричества в Польше и является одним из крупнейшим в Европе эмитентом парниковых газов. Но ничего, пыхтит себе.
