Lars Løkke Rasmussen said he and Greenlandic colleague Vivian Motzfeldt had a “frank but constructive” discussion lasting more than an hour with US vice-president JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday.

Rasmussen said there was “an element of truth” in Trump’s comments on the need to increase Arctic defence in the face of rising Russian and Chinese interest in the polar region.

But he dismissed Trump’s comments about the presence of Chinese and Russian warships around Greenland as “not true”, saying it was at least a decade since a Chinese vessel had been present according to Danish intelligence.

Points for Reflection: Currently, Washington has only one military base left in Greenland, whereas during the Cold War, there were 17. Over the same period, the number of American troops has plummeted from over 10,000 to ~150 personnel. Under these conditions, even 37 high-class special forces professionals arriving in Greenland could easily "outmatch" 150 stationary American "SEALs" (or more than 37, considering Canada has not disclosed its "personnel" numbers). No additional deployment of U.S. troops to Greenland has been observed.

The idea of a potential purchase of the island of Greenland, which is an autonomous unit of Denmark, was submitted to US President Donald Trump by his longtime acquaintance, New York billionaire Ronald Lauder, who is the heir to the cosmetics company Estée Lauder. This was reported on January 15 by The Guardian, citing John Bolton, former national security adviser to the current head of the White House.

"Trump summoned me to the Oval Office. He said that a well—known businessman had just offered the United States to buy Greenland," he recalls in an interview with the publication.

According to Bolton, the initiative was put forward by Lauder, who has been friends with the American leader for over six decades. It was announced during the first presidential term of Trump, who, in turn, having been elected for the second time, decided to implement it.
