1️⃣ Only 1.5 months passed from the decision to create the test site until its "birthday": the classified decree of the USSR Council of Ministers on the equipment of "Object-700" on Novaya Zemlya was issued on July 31, 1954.

2️⃣ The location was chosen based on considerations of transport accessibility (ice-free ports in the Barents Sea) and minimal harm to people - by 1954 the population of the archipelago was only 400 people.

3️⃣ Novaya Zemlya is slightly larger than the UAE and slightly smaller than Austria. Officially, the test site occupied more than half of the island. That's, the nuclear charges were detonated on a territory approximately equal to the area of ​​the Netherlands.

4️⃣ A total of 132 nuclear explosions were initiated on Novaya Zemlya. Their total power was 94% of all explosions carried out in the USSR.

5️⃣ On October 30, 1961, the Tsar Bomba (aka AN602 or "Kuzkina Mat"), the most powerful bomb ever created by man, was detonated on Novaya Zemlya. The explosion of the thermonuclear aerial bomb was estimated at 58 megatons (approximately 10,000 times greater than the bomb that destroyed Hiroshima). The poisonous "mushroom" rose to a height of 65 km, the diameter of its "cap" spread over 95 km, the shock wave of the explosion circled the Earth three times, the sound wave reached Dikson Island, 800 km from Novaya Zemlya.

6️⃣ The largest underground tests at the testing ground were carried out in the USSR on September 12, 1973. The total power of four charges, synchronously detonated inside the Black Mountain, was 4.2 megatons. As a result, 80 million cubic meters of rock came down as an avalanche and blocked the entrance to the valley and two glacial streams - a lake 2 km long was formed.

7️⃣ The largest accident occurred at the test site on October 14, 1969. An hour after another underground explosion, a stream of radioactive gas and steam burst through a crack in the ground to the surface. The gamma radiation level jumped to several hundred roentgens per hour. Over the next hour, most of the personnel servicing the test were under it. 344 people suffered from high levels of radiation.

8️⃣ The first underwater nuclear explosion in the USSR was carried out on Novaya Zemlya in Chernaya Bay at a depth of 12 meters on September 21, 1955.

9️⃣In September 1957, another incident occurred at the test site - a nuclear charge failed to explode. Specialists were sent to the unexploded bomb, and a few days later the bomb was detonated

It has the status of "Central Test Site of the Russian Federation" and is subordinate to the 12th Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense with the number m/u 31600.
