Traces of caesium-137, a radioactive isotope released during the decay of uranium-235, which is used in the fuel for nuclear reactors and the "filling" of nuclear weapons, were found in samples from two radiation monitoring stations, Viksjöfjäll and Svanhovd, Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (DSA) reported.

Evidence of the testing can be seen by studying daily updated satellite images from the Arctic archipelago.
▫️The Barents Observer has in the course of the summer seen several cargo-ships and special purpose vessels in the waters outside Pankovo and over the last few weeks, Rosatom’s two large Il-76 transport planes have periodically been parked at the airport in Rogachevo at Novaya Zemlya.

2️⃣ The location was chosen based on considerations of transport accessibility (ice-free ports in the Barents Sea) and minimal harm to people - by 1954 the population of the archipelago was only 400 people.

7️⃣ The largest accident occurred at the test site on October 14, 1969. An hour after another underground explosion, a stream of radioactive gas and steam burst through a crack in the ground to the surface. The gamma radiation level jumped to several hundred roentgens per hour. Over the next hour, most of the personnel servicing the test were under it. 344 people suffered from high levels of radiation.

8️⃣ The first underwater nuclear explosion in the USSR was carried out on Novaya Zemlya in Chernaya Bay at a depth of 12 meters on September 21, 1955.
