Sarmat was created to implement the concept of so-called "orbital bombardment". This is a means of overcoming missile defense, which allows attacking objects on US territory along a variety of trajectories, including through South Pole — bypassing deployed missile defense systems, and requiring the US to create a "circular missile defense system", which is significantly more expensive than America’s THAAD shield system currently deployed on a standard (shortest ) flight paths of Russian silo-based ICBMs.
